Connect your iPad to the USB port on your computer, open iTunes and on the left side of the panel will appear a category for Devices...select the iPad. The summary window will have the information on the iPad and below that the choice for Restore. Select Restore, and you will have to do some confirming usually, and the system will go to work restoring the iPad to the factory settings. Since this unit has not been used, you don't have to worry about losing any loaded settings or software.

Then go ahead and register the iPad and give it a name, etc.

Ok, first, keep in mind this is a user-to-user forum so we sometimes need to ask a lot of questions that may seem simple but we need information to try and sort out issues.

When you power up the iPad, exactly what happens? Does the grey Apple logo appear in the center of the screen? Then what do you get after it is powered up?

Have you fully charged the iPad from a wall outlet?

Just trying to establish a baseline that we can work from.

hi ralph, thank you for your reply. when i turned it on the first time, i was able to configure it to my wi-fi and can use it normally, browsing, youtube, and apps. but never plugged it into a computer, so it was never registered to any computer. i was even able to download free apps. this morning, when i open it again, i was prompted to enter passcode. i don't know the passcode so i checked the internet if there is a default passcode. from the ipad support page, i see local wipe procedure wherein you let a number of wrong passcodes and it should wipe out the ipad and i thought that will reset it to factory setting. but it didn't and all i see is the 'ipad is disabled. connect to itunes'. I connected it to my mac and i was prompted to unlock from ipad. is there a way to reset it to factory default?

A thief can erase/restore the iPad and set it up as new, since anybody can connect to it through iTunes. All putting a passcode lock on the iPad does is makes it difficult to look at your personal data stored on that device. If you are concerned about theft, your best bets are to 1) Use MobilMe to try to locate it and erase it remotely if that fails and 2) Add it to an insurance policy of some kind.
