Finding Size Of Folders Quickly Without Using Additional Apps?

Occasionally I need to find which are the largest items in a folder containing maybe 50 or more files/folders.

Clicking the "Size" column header instantly sorts out the files into order of size, but the folders, which may contain many gigabytes of material, do not register as having any size.

I can of course open each folder but as there are often a great many this would be time-consuming and tedious.

Is there a quick way round this problem which will enable me to either view the sizes of all the folders or at least open them all so that the sizes of the files contained can be seen.

Note that I have several apps (WhatSize etc.) for sorting out the size of every file on the computer but these tend to take some time.

I want to know if there is a simple, instantaneous way, not involving having to open another app.

If you have every folder calculate folder sizes, it will churn your disk a lot, which will both show down your system, and add wear & tear to your disk.

If you are looking for stuff based on size, then doing this for a short period of time makes sense, but when you are finished, it would be wise to turn calculate folder sizes off again.

I find if I need to find large files or folder trees consuming lots of space, that OmniDiskSweeper (free download) works very well for me.

But there are times I also use Calculate folder sizes, just not all the time.

I usually use JDiskReport as it seems to be able to measure specified folders etc. as well as a complete disk.

OmniDiskSweeper has a similar feature. I stick with OmniDiskSweeper as it was the first such utility I found, and since I tend to just throw more storage at my systems rather than prune them back, I do not use this family utilities all that much.

I was wondering WHY doing this would put such a great strain on the disk, since this process is only something that would occur when you first start up, or open a new finder window, no?
Why is calculating sizes any more of a load than any listing of data?
