Mystery icon gunking up iPad

I don't have any pending app downloads. On the last page of my iPad there is a solid white icon that says "Waiting...". It appeared a couple days ago. Since then, I can't update any of my apps. Holding down icons doesn't work. This "phantom icon" has no "x" to remove it from the desktop. Please advise.
