why does my iphone keep restoring

I am updating my wifes phone to the latest software. I tunes backed up the phone but when its finished i tunes keeps saying it finds an iphone in recovery mode and says I must restore it. It has done this 3 times so far. Why is it doing this and how many times do I have to restore before it becomes useable again.
