Copy my old HD to a new mac

My old MacBook Pro crashed but not the harddrive which was saved and still is working (and the only backup I have). How do I copy the old HD to the new MacBook Pro I bought? Could I start it up from the old HD if I connect it to the new mac?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Connect them with a FireWire cable, start the old one in Target Disk Mode (hold "T" while booting), and use Migration Assistant on the new computer to transfer your accounts and data. It is safer to reinstall applications on the new computer rather than get them from the old computer.
