Aperture not recognizing assets in import window

- My usual import settings are to move files from the desktop to an external drive and have referenced masters appear in a designated project folder with Aperture. I apply metadata and have a master file rename.

However, it doesn't seem to make a difference what settings I choose since nothing shows up in the window that displays images to be imported not matter what settings I have selected.

I quit Aperture and re open it, sometimes twice, before being able to import. This is broken and I don't want to do it that way anymore.

Yes. How do I get this to stop happening?

Also, this may be, for the most part, a user to user forum - but I have had interactions with Apple Pro App employees as a result of posts on this forum. So Kirby, do you have a suggestion?
