I recently switched to a mac from a PC. I used a Sony MicroVault USM-L flash drive to switch over the files I wanted to keep from my PC to the mac. The files were suppossed to automatically decompress if I drug and dropped them. I can get them to do so on my P, but not my Mac. I am now stuck with a bunch of .vem files that I can't open. The decompression program won't run. It's a .exe and it just opens in TextEdit as a bunch of symbols. Most of the files I need are Word documents (.doc). There are also several .bmp images.
How do I get my files decompressed on my mac? Or will I have to email all of the files to myself to get them transferred?
UPDATE: After 1 1/2 hrs the live chat support people finally gave me a solution: when the flash drive is plugged into the Windows OS, disable the compression software and re-do all the file transfers.
An hour and a half, plus two "analysts" to tell me that much. Sony, you are useless. I will never be buying from you again.
You would need to contact Sony's tech support. To my knowledge, the Sony microvault virtual expander software is windows-only (it runs an *.exe program file that is on the flash device itself for on the fly compression/decompression).
You will either need a regular flash device (formatted as FAT32) without the proprietary windows-only compression, or somehow disable the automatic compression when you drag the files onto the device from the windows machine.
Did you have to install a windows driver with the drive, to get the automatic compression feature? If so, perhaps just deleting (or moving, temporarily) the driver will disable the compression?
If this is just to be a one time transfer to your new machine, what about just burning a Cd or DVD? Remember, your Mac can read a PC formatted optical disc.
E.g.
"To stop the Micro Vault Virtual Expander function temporarily, right-click the Micro Vault Virtual Expander icon in the Taskbar tray, select “Automatic compression drive,” and clear the check box next to the desired drive."
It didn't have me install anything on either machine the fist time I plugged it in. Which according to Sony it should have, but it didn't ask me to do anything on either machine.
I don't have the PC with me as it's the family laptop and I'm up at college. I only have access to it when I'm at home. I might end up dealing with it's super slow file burning to a CD when I'm home next if the live support person proves useless. I finally managed to get the Sony Support website to give me a freaking number to call.
Update: I tried calling the number given to me. It rang for over 3 min with no answer before disconnecting me. I am now attempting to use the live chat service. which is proving utterly useless.
