I've been having the exact same problem with that error message. I've tried running the network connectivity diagnostic test. It said, "Secure link to iTunes store failed." When I tried to click the "help" button, I couldn't even connect to the help page. My SSL and TLS connections are enabled. The firewall isn't blocking it either. I've even gone so far as to reinstall my current version of iTunes (188.8.131.52) -- is my version just too old 'cause I really don't want to have to update (it takes forever - dial-up).
Update: I checked to see if the store would open on a different computer that had updated iTunes. It did open without any error message.
Also, those two SSL and TLS connections are enabled. I have not changed any settings on my computer, or changed anything in general. iTunes store has pretty much always opened without incident, unless it was for a short period of time.
I am using version 8.0.2
*PLEASE POST IF UPDATING YOUR ITUNES ALLOWS ACCESS TO THE STORE.*

Still unable to access the store the normal way, but I can gain access via the path described in this thread:
Basically, click on Podcasts, then Podcast Directory. From here, I believe you can click on any link, although I didn't try absolutely every one, just the main ones. The only troublemaker is Music. For me, it gives the same error message I get every time I click "iTunes Store." So to get to music, select "Genres" and pick one from the drop down menu to gain access to the Music section.
In summary: It appears to be the Music section of iTunes that is causing the issue.
Hope this at least helps users gain access to the store!

Same here. 'iTunes temporarily unavailable' has haunted me for the past three days. Some saving grace in that it appears - on reading the plethora of responses in Apple Discussions - to be an iTunes issue that hopefully will soon be fixed. i.e. saves me trawling through various techno-maneouvres that i'm rubbish at in order to (try and) rectify the issue. You'd think that iTunes would beam a notice out into the ether if there was a problem their end so to put folks' minds at ease. hhyeah..
I received the reply below from an iTunes Support person, but I'm not convinced that it is not a problem originating with Apple, as I find it hard to believe that so many users are suddenly experiencing this issue and it could be related to "web acceleration or firewall software." I haven't made any configuration changes to my system and all of a sudden as of 10/30 have had this trouble.
Has anybody else contact support and received a response similar to this (below) ?

Funny thing is, if they'd referred to this discussion thread, they would have seen multiple users reporting this same problem.
I am running iTunes 10 on an iMac. I tried to update some apps just now and got the following:
" We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection was lost."
There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later.
Home network is fine, updated apps yesterday, no problem.
Here is what is weird. Tried to check for app updates on my iPhone4, and it just keeps searching, never connects.
I am having the same issue from both Windows Vista and my MacBook Pro. Tried from work and didn't work then tried from home and same issue. So it's not a firewall or anything like that.
Can't imagine how much revenue is being lost right now to this problem. Hate to be the admin that's to blame.
ALSO: Enabling TLS1.0 didn't fix the issue.

I'm having the same problem, I just got my iPhone 3gs this last Friday, and I've downloaded MANY apps lol... For some reason I can't access the iTunes store on my computer or on my phone... My comp information is listed below, and my iPhone is a model MC640LL iPhone 3gs with version 4.1 (8B117).... When I try and download apps on my phone they'll just sit there in the waiting status for a good 10 minutes, it'll ask me to log in, so I log in and then after a bit it'll say that the iTunes store cannot be accessed... When I go on my comp using iTunes version 10.0.1.22 it will take me to the page, I'll attempt to purchase the app and it'll say "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out." It does not seem to be my connection as this site as well as speedtest, and many other sites pull up and run stress test just fine...
