Mac Mini keeps crashing :-(

My mac mini recently informed me it was running low on memory. It has now started crashing everytime I re-start it. I'm really worried as I'm struggling to open iPhoto and it contains all my photos of my daughter from birth and they're not backed up- am I going to loose them? How can I get additional memory and get my mac mini working again?
