error 512

Hi All,

I've got an error 512 when backing up with time machine: Cannot complete making a backup (translated from dutch). Can anyone give me an indication what this error code means, or where I can find reference?

Thanks in advance
Regards!

Holzum

PS I'm purposely not adding any system data other than the OS yet to keep the discussion focused on this code...

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

I don't recall seeing a "512" error before.

Take a look at section C in the table of contents of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). See if anything there seems to be a close translation.

If not, see #A1 there. Download the widget, and copy and post the log here, along with the exact text of the message you saw (#C2 shows how to find it again). I don't read Dutch, but may be able to find it in the language files.

By the way. The file name for the backup at the moment is:
"EHSH Mac 001b6395b0fb_2010-10-19-220951_2010-10-19-221356_2010-10-20-185506
2010-10-20-191524 2010-10-20-191919_2010-10-21-190748_2010-10-21-193436
2010-10-21-210112 2010-10-21-210502_2010-10-21-225637_2010-10-21-2314182010-10-22-175845.sparsebundle"

There seems to be a strange reference to dates (of which there are no backups made) that to the best of my knowledge wasn't there when the backup was initiated.

That makes no sense. 😟

I take it your backups are on a +Time Capsule?+ If not, what?

How are you seeing that name? Via the Finder?

Hi,

the sparsebundle is on a NAS where it has been for over 3 years, and I'm looking at it with finder. The share is approachable and read/writable, Time machine can even open the backup as normal...
After selecting the appropriate drive again, I'm now getting the following error message: "backup copy not available"

Any help very much appreciated! Can anyone tell what the correct name it, or where it can be found (maybe in a log or settings file?)

Oops. That's a whole different thing. 😟 The "512" error may be coming from your NAS, not OSX. Can you find it in your system.log? If so, see what the sender is. (See the tan box in [OSX Log Files|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Logs.html], then the blue one, for help doing that). Copy and post the whole message, including sender, here; maybe we can figure it out.

That doesn't sound like a Time Machine message, either, although it may be a translation. Check it, too, as above, and post it, too.

If made +*by Time Machine,+* a sparse bundle should be named +*<Computer name>.sparsebundle+* if made by Snow Leopard; +*<Computer Name>.<12 numbers & letters>.sparsebundle+* if made on Leopard (the 12 numbers & letters are your Mac's hardware address).

But your NAS may have made it's own, or instructed you to make one, so you'll have to check their instructions.
