How do you force restore or reset disabled ipod touch?

It is becoming obvious that I'l never be able to connect with itunes again, so how can I just reset the thing and start over?
Can't restore because itunes never allows access because the device is disabled. I am using my principle computer right now, but the last computer it was synced with no longer exists, so that isn't an option if that one is required.
I'll have to use another method so I would appreciate any information. I only have two days to fix this before I leave the country.

Did you try to connect in recovery mode and restore "as new ipod"? Recovery mode is explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

I did attempt that but itunes still flashed the "passcode locked" error as soon as it made contact with my ipod. I held the home button down for about a minute.
1. How long must one continue to press the button for this method to work?
2. Should I not have itunes open while trying this?

thanks for the help so far, I hope I can get this figured out soon.

I got it to work after a couple tries, but about 20 minutes into the iOS 4.1 download, the error came up again about it being locked with a passcode so I cancelled to clear it. Not sure if that would be normal or not, but the download isn't affected so far. After it completes I will try again.

I guess this will be an ongoing process today, hopefully it will work.
