Q: Acquired Metadata

Hello all,
I have set up our FCS environment and so far can see a lot of benefits and potential in the system. We were using a file structure based management workflow, so moving to a metadata management only system is new to us, however working with metadata is not. I was curious if anyone out there can shed some light on a problem I am trying to solve.

When I drag assets into the client window, I apply all my metadata, and all assets acquire this metadata. I then make a production, in which I have to re-enter all the same metadata. If I add any more assets to this project/production I need to re-enter all metadata again.

Using metadata has been a great way to search and organize our assets, but with all the re-entry of metadata we are leaving ourselves vulnerable to entry mistakes, possibly losing assets to the system.

I would like to create a production that has a metadata group of various metadata fields, fill out said metadata fields, then have any assets I drag into that production acquire that productions metadata. Is this possible?

For example:

Production has our job number, job reference, client, director etc. I would like all assets to acquire this metadata so that when a search is executed under assets the corresponding assets are presented.

So a search under assets for a client will present all assets that have the matching clients metadata in the file.

Let me know as this will make a great impact to our current workflow.

Thanks.

You may be confusing the Production's unique Metadata with the Asset's unique Metadata. Two different groups of metadata, and I've seen new, untrained uses get confused. If you go into your Production, and double click an Asset, you'll see the exact same Metadata you entered and "Saved" in the Uploaod window.

Associating an Asset with a Production does not remove any metadata, the Asset's metadata is exactly the same, unchanged by the Production itself.

But you could set up a unique Metadata Group for each Production, that included a Set that had pre-set metadata fields with that information. When you uploaded an Asset, or group of Assets at once, you'd simply specify this Metadata Group in the upload window.

It's not difficult. Have you gone through the book "Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro 1.5"? Everything you'd need to know to achieve what you want is in this book.
