Serious Purchasing Confusion

I recently attempted to get a new phone w/ AT&T I was told I would have to make a $500 diposit but the man was nice enough to reduce it to 100 still unsure if my contract was gonna go up I refused. I decided I wanted to get an iPhone. I attemted to purchase one through AT&T's Premeir store so I could obtain a student discount on my plan. I was denied and told they could not sell me the phone at all and I qualifed for a prepaid plan. I attempted agian through the regular AT&T's site and had the same message pop up. BUT when I logged on to the Apple Store's website I was told that I would have to make a $150 diposit at an apple store or AT&T store. My fear is that upon arrival the sales rep will back track and say that my diposit will be higher regardless of what the site said. Anyone have any input?

If you have no credit history or a poor credit history or rating when a credit report is run by AT&T, a deposit will be required. After paying your monthly bill in full and on time for 12 months, the deposit will be credited.

If you purchase an iPhone at AT&T's subsidized or discounted price, a two year contract is required along with one of the available data plans.

The iPhone cannot be used on a pre-paid plan or account. You can purchase an iPhone at the full retail sales price or no-contract price which isn't cheap and you will be on a post-paid or billed monthly plan that can be cancelled at any time.

They refused to sell me a phone completly though. My fear is that if I go to an AT&T store they are gonna charge me a sky high diposit again or tell me no. My confusion is that when I first inquired about a purchase that was not an iPhone they said I had to pay $500 and now Apple is telling me I only have to pay $150, when the diposit rate is supposedly according to the jurisdiction of AT&T. I called Apple and they said that they will only require the $150 when I pick up my phone. All in all I want my iPhone BEFORE Thanksgiving and I want to pay the LOWEST diposit possible and possibly being able to gain my student discount to my data and voice plans.

Go with the info from Apple directly, they have concessions that they and only they will step around. As far as your deposit with AT&T, most often it's internal that drives the deposit up...remember they have mergered a lot and you may have an old account or a local phone service acct that's affecting you. Check your credit report if you have had to pay the ETF with another carrier or failed to pay a final bill AT&T will likely suggest prepaid first, you can keep prepaid for like 6 months then convert it to a post paid account

Not with the iPhone you can't. The iPhone cannot be on a prepaid account. Even when paying the full retail sales price or the no-contact price which doesn't require a contract, the iPhone is on a month to month to basis under a post-paid account. Contract or no contract with the iPhone and a credit check is required by AT&T since the account is on a post-paid account basis regardless.

I wasn't actually suggesting that you can use the iPhone prepaid...I was suggesting getting a cheapy and build up on the prepaid side because when the account converts to a post paid acct the credit check will be internal for AT&T only, then it will eligible for a new phone under the post paid account then you can buy the iphone at the new/upgrade price and not have to buy it outright
