How do I transfer items from my iPod Touch to my iTunes Library?

After syncing my iPod Touch, I tried to update my iPod software to version 4.1, but received this message ...

+"There are purchased items on the iPod that have not been transferred to your iTunes Library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes Library before updating this iPod."+

How do I find out what the items are and how do I transfer them to my iTunes Library (syncing hasn't done it).

Any ideas?!

Use the Transfer Purchases command in the File menu.

I got the same message about needing to transfer files before updating. I found and used the "Transfer Purchases" command but still got the same message after the transfer. Any other ideas? How do I even find out what needs to be moved? I know I have a PDF file in the ibook app that isn't transferring and nothing I have tried has worked to make it transfer.
