4th gen Unwanted Shuffle

I bought a used 4th Gen Ipod, and it shuffles randomly when not prompted. I have made sure (and double checked) the shuffle option is off. It just switches to shuffle mode randomly during songs. I've reset the Ipod, but it did not fix the problem. any solutions? (I can return it, but I would like to know if there is a fix for this problem).
