Q: A Sad day.. Xserve discontinued...

Well... this looks like Apple is on the way to ditch the Enterprise market, as there "so called" XServe alternatives are not alternatives at all.

A server without a redundant power supply? Are you kidding?

Apple doesn't think about us : Mac admins...

mmmm who was the moron who made this decision, Yeah great now I'll need to buy another rack when installing an xsan just for the macpro's. Which don't have any real enterprise redundancy in them.

Seriously Why don't we just hand over the entire video market to Avid on a big shinny golden plater.

This is horrible news for any ACN out there. We fight tooth and nail to convince business and enterprise that Apple is a valid contender. How OSX Server is "real UNIX" and how Apple servers are more cost effective for licensing and support.

To then have to sheepishly explain we have no rack-mounted option, no hot-swap drives or redundant power, no LOM, no actual "server" - it's embarrassing and destroys Apple's presence in the server room.

Please Apple, don't give up on servers - don't make us all go back to marginalizing Apples to the "creative" department and using Microsoft or Linux for the backbone.

Maybe this is a signal to come that Apple is going to let their Server version of the OS be able to run natively on other hardware or be officially virtualized on 3rd Party Hardware as an alternative? Sad announcement indeed. Mac Pro/Mac mini cannot be the answer! Shame on you Apple.

I don't want to have to go back to Windows Server.

And what will happen to XSAN?

I've stuck by Apple for years in the face of other technologies proposed by coworkers and contractors. Having the Xserve to back up my arguments helped me win many of them.

Now I guess I'm going to have to start looking for new work to do, because my company is NOT going to go with a server technology that doesn't have redundant power supplies, truly rack mountable, LOM, and more.

We have 200 users - all Macs - and the Windows server with XtremeZ-IP solution we currently have *****. I just handed in a budget for new Xserves next year.
I'm doing Macs for 20 years now and constantly Apple has been coming up with servers, tried to convince me how wonderful they are and then ditched them some time later.
The fact they never had a clear roadmap was bad enough for any enterprise client. Decisions like this are simply ridiculous.
Shame on you, Apple!

This is a sad day indeed. I'm highly disappointed with this decision. I just don't get it...
