I haven't found a way to defeat auto-play. -
Sep 12, 2016 9:02 AM in response to Daniel S.by theo sudarja,You know what. Mines is even weirder. I have 2 unit of iPod shuffle, latest square version. The first one in silver is mine, seccond one in pink is my wife iPod.
Being same generation and same firmware version, but the pink one doesn't do auto play. It only play only after you turn on, then press play button after. Weird.
On the other hand. My silver iPod is always normal. Auto play every times turned on.

Sep 12, 2016 12:42 PM in response to Daniel S.by Kenichi Watanabe,No. There's no option for that. However, when I use my iPod shuffle, I mostly keep power switch in ON position all the time. The shuffle goes into power-saving sleep mode when inactive for a short period (with power switch ON). I don't notice a reduction in battery life. I don't like messing with that tiny switch, and keeping it ON all the time saves it from the wear-and-tear of constantly moving it back and forth. If you leave the power switch ON, you start playing by pressing Play, like you want.
