Mac not detecting my brother MFC440CN

I have an all in one brother MFC440CN printer....I do not have any problems printing, but when it comes to scanning, it is giving me problems. That MAc says it does not detect scanner. I believe the problems started after we bought the time capsule. I remember scanning before with no problems. Any ideas or suggestions to fix the problem. Thanks.

iMAC desktop, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Welcome to Apple Support Discussions.

How the printer connected to your printer? Please be precise. If you have it connected via USB to your Time Capsule that is your problem. Time Capsule's wireless printing is just that wireless printing, not wireless scanning. This is a common error people make, they buy an AIO with printing & scanning functionality but not true wi-fi or networking and then connect it to a TC or Airport Extreme via USB and expect all the functionality to work when Apple only promises printing.

However if you have it connected via ethernet to the TC it should work assuming your are using Apple's drivers.

It is connected to the computer itself via USB, and I had the all in one printer prior to having the Mac. We already downloaded the apple driver when we first noticed the problem. At first we did have it connected to the time capsule and it would not print or scan, then I connected it to the computer USB port and it only prints but not scans. thanks for the reply.

Previously I mentioned that the it stated that there was no device detected, I was wrong what it said was that there was no device selected. I opened Image Capture and it said there was no device detected. I turned off printer and turned back on, then pressed scanned. Both the Image capture application and the scanner application seemed to have detected the device but then it said failed to open session on device. we played around with the buttons on scanner by pressing the scan button again and it opened up the scan q and it let us scan two pictures after that it said device disconnected. We tried it again and it went back to saying the same things, no device selected/unable to open session on device.

Thank you everyone for you ides I have actually solved the problem, at least it seems that way...we went into the printer/scanner settings menu and compared the subset mask info and on the printer to that on the computer and it was different so we changed that, as well as the ethernet info it was on auto and we changed it to 10B-HD...it has allowed to scan numerous pics without any issues. Thanks again....
