Q: iSight does not work with online Flash-based chat sites

Hello. I have tried everything to get my iSight to work online with sites like Chatroulette, but Flash is not detecting the camera at all.

Some facts:
1. The iSight is detected under System Profiler > USB > USB High-Speed Bus > Built-in iSight.
2. The iSight works in Photo Booth and other similar apps.
3. I have reset the PRAM and PMU 3 times each, to no avail.
4. I have created a separate user, but the same problem exists on that account.
5. When I try to change the camera settings on Chatroulette, I am either presented with no camera options at all or only "DV Video" and "IIRC Firewire."
6. This has been a problem for about 4 months now. It was fixed temporarily after a system update but came back shortly thereafter.

I don't believe this is a hardware problem, because it works fine in Photo Booth. I've even tried to have Photo Booth and Chatroulette open at the same time, but I still can't select my iSight as a camera. It doesn't detect it.

I have tried every solution online I could find, but nothing has worked for me. Any ideas, short of reinstalling the OS? Thanks!

Same here, when clicking on the little blue window in the flash settings, the cam turns on, without having any affect on the main window whatsoever though. I did (out of curiosity) install the Google Voice and Video plugin which I've never used before, to see what would happen. There are no Google-options added to the drop-down menu in flash and it does not display any cam-pictures when using it, but it does active my cam and the one who I am chatting with does see me. Uninstalling Google Voice does unsurprisingly nothing. I'm afraid the only thing left to do is to either wait for an update to flash or to reinstall the whole system (which is a whole lot of work with no 100% guarantee of working). I really can't wait for the day when flash is completely unnecessary...

Ok, I'm back again. I am having the same problem as StefanKK. I have installed and reinstalled
Flash multiple times, both the version I found on the Adobe website and the beta version supplied on
this forum. I also uninstalled Google Voice, which made sites like ChatRoulette and Mebeam work
fine. I repaired my disk permissions. However, like StefanKK said, other Flash sites, such as fonomo,
do not work at all. I can right click and open the settings panel for Flash and when I do, I can go to
the last tab and select my iSight (which is already now selected by default because it is the only
camera listed), and when I click the little blue window in that panel my camera will turn on and show
my image. Yet as soon as I close the settings the camera shuts off.

Any help with this is appreciated.

Although I had correctly configured my Adobe Flash settings, the fonomo site
http://www.fonomo.com/ does not support video for me either this morning.

I note that it is a beta site, so perhaps it will work later. If you want further help on this
particular site, you should contact the web host or webmaster. They may not even know that it
is not working for OS X 10.6.5 users. If so, they will likely appreciate your feedback.

Other Flash sites I tested this morning are working for me. However, I agree with StefanKK's
opinion that it would be nice to have a viable alternative to Flash.

OK, I found solution for me. I downgraded flash on version 10,0,45,2 and flash based chats are working for me.

This worked for me after everything else failed - thanks a million!

I went to this link: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4783/adobe-flash-player

And I downloaded the beta version of Flash 10.2.161.23 that is included toward the bottom of the page. Things work splendidly.

    Welcome to Discussions, gcawker

It's good to see another success with the "Square" Flash beta that is also available directly from Adobe:

    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

Thanks for letting us know the 64-bit beta worked for you, too.

    I found a FIX!!!

o im not sure if this solution has been posted already but, ive been having a problem with this as well and I had the list including the google adaptors under my flash settings.

If you have that list than you must have google voice and video installed. However if you do not see the uninstall option in you library do the following:

    1. Open terminal
    2. copy/paste the following command: open "/Library/Application Support/Google/GoogleVoiceAndVideoUninstaller.app"

    3. It will ask u to close all internet browsing apps and press ok
    4. It will say google voice and video successfully installed.
    4. Do this and try using chatroulette/omegle/etc.

this worked for me hope this helps u guys

Thank you, downgrading to version 10,0,45,2 worked for me too. (Though flash won't work in Firefox at all now and Video does still not work in Chrome, but everything is fine now in Safari. Any idea why this might be?)

    Well done, Michael Pane!

The fix that worked for you was previously posted by user OysterOyster, who reported that uninstalling
the Google plugins you mention restores proper iSight function with Flash and Mac OS X 10.6.5.

OysterOyster found the GoogleVoiceAndVideoUninstaller.app in his startup disk's
Library/Application Support/Google/ folder. (not in his Home > Library folder)

The terminal command you used executes the app from your startup disk's Library folder.
The command would not have worked if the app were not there, so you must have missed
seeing it or perhaps you looked in the wrong library folder.

Regardless, your persistence certainly got results! Thanks for letting us know how you did it.

Yep, downgrading to 10.0.45.2 flash isn't working in Chrome for me too. Don't know why.

Might be that Chrome needs an update for compatibility with some of your other third-party item.
It is also possible that Chrome is conflicting with some of your other items or vice versa.
Have you tried uninstalling Chrome or any other third-party items you might not need?

Tried uninstalling Chrome and Firefox, deleted Microsoft Silverlight too. Have tried all the versions of Flash suggested. Manroulette and other sites still not working for me, but Chatroulette is.

yeah jim ik what u mean i did see oyster's post and i actually meant Library/Application Support/Google/ folder when i originally posted. When i went into the good folder in my app support folder, the app to uninstall didnt show up there. So running the command on terminal may serve as a better fix to those who dont see the app.

yeah Michael I agree with ur comments for pepl that r comforable using terminal.
However, location mistakes, keyboard, or other input errors in terminal can be serious, so
I think that users who are not certain they can safely use terminal should stay with the GUI way.
