Iphone not sending Text Messages. HELP!

Just a few minutes ago, my phone decided that it didn't want to send text messages anymore. I've tried turning off the phone and turning it back on, and I've updated the software, but it's still not working. My connectivity is fine, I have all bars. I also have the same issue with picture messaging. My picture messaging actually stopped working shortly after I bought the phone, but I didn't see that as a issue since I don't need that feature. But I do need my text messaging!

I've also noticed that my phone likes to freeze now and then...

Any suggestions or reasons as to why it would just quit?
This phone is practically new (bought it in September.) I really hope I didn't get a faulty phone. By the way, it's an Iphone 3GS 8GB...if that helps.
