No sound over Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter

I bought a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (http://www.cables2u.co.uk/mini-displayport-hdmi-socket-p-844.html) and this adapter should allow the transmission of both video and audio. Video works fine but no audio is transmitted when I connect my MacBook Air to a HDTV, and there is not even an option to do so under System Preferences > Sound > Output (Internal Speakers is the only option available). Any suggestions?

MacBook Air 11.6 (1.6 GHz, 4GB), Mac OS X (10.6.4)

DisplayPort to HDMI Sound is actually set up by using the MIDI setup utility found in :

Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.

If you purchased an iWires cable direct from Apple the instructions are in the printed booklet that comes in the packaging. Most people don't read this as it's normally the case that when you plug a cable in to anything it just works (VCR, TiVo, Xbox, video camera etc). In this instance Apple are failing to live up to their catch-phrase as final setup is NOT intuitive; "it just DOESN'T work".

The booklet instructions basically say do the following,

Video

System Preferences > Displays. There are 3 tabs in the window; Displays, Arrangement and Color. Be sure you are on the Displays tab. Bottom left of the window tick "Show displays in menu bar" and then bottom right click "Detect Displays".

Now click on the tab named Arrangement. Bottom left of the window tick "Mirror Displays".

You should now only see 2 tabs, Display and Color. Be sure you are on the Displays tab. Select the desired resolution for your TV (probably 1080i). leave all other settings at their default values.

Sound

System Preferences > Sound. There are 3 tabs in the window; Sound Effects, Output and Input. Be sure you are on the Sound Effects tab. Middle of the window select your TV where it says "Play sound effects through:".

Select the middle tab named Output.

Select your TV from the drop-down list next to HDMI, below where it says "Select a device for sound output".

Using either Finder or Launchpad go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.

On the left-hand side of the window you should now see HDMI. In the middle of the window, on the Output tab, where it says "Source:" select your TV from the drop-down list.

This last action below is NOT described in the iWires notes but was required in my case, it may also be required in yours. If you CANNOT see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list on the left, do the following:

Bottom left of the window select the wheel icon with the down-pointing triangle. Make sure that sound output is selected and that you can now see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list of devices.

If you still cannot hear sound, log out of your account and then log back in.

You will now have sound coming out of your TV from your computer 🙂

You may have to do some or all of the above to get sound out of your TV from your computer using the DisplayPort to HDMI cable. On my Aug 2011 MacbookPro I had to do ALL of the above. If you take your laptop to a different TV you will have to do it all again so be warned.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your response, again. I have tried several other MPA HDMI adapters all with the same result.

My TV is 4 years old, but also a SHARP EQUOS. I can drive it's audio successfully throught he same HDMI port from my PVR, DVD player abd camcorder, so that's working (sort of)

Possibly the older moshi adapters stream the HDMI sound better (works).

Interesting that your replacement MOSHI's work. Are they of this older variety.

I have called APPLE who say its not their problem and MOSHI who say the same. My feeling is my problem IS 1) my TV is an early HDMI (1.1 I think) and APPLE which has only recently provided HDMI audi streaming via the MDP didn't get it right for early HDMI's.

Good luck to you.

This solution worked for me Thanks. The connection I used is: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4M-Mini-Display-Port-HDMI-Cable-Air-MacBook-Pro-/33060 4853577?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item4cf995b949.

Its not the greatest of quality, not sure how long it will last but after working through the set up posted by Snug Blanket it worked perfectly.

My set up: the latest macbook (white) and a Sony Bravia KDL 32EX403

If anyone is able to select HDMI from system preferences->sound but the sound still doesn't work, you might try looking at the inidividual program options. For instance, in VLC, you have to go to Audio->Audio Device->HDMI before VLC videos will play audio from your television. I changed the preferences in VLC and still had to restart the program before it worked properly, but it did work!

HDMI should show up as an option in the Preferences/Sound window. If you have selected it and are still getting no sound, usually with a "The selected device has no output control" message, the next step is to go to Audio Midi setup.

Open Audio Midi setup from the Utilities folder. Go to Window/Show Audio Window to configure external speakers.

Your HDMI connection should be in the list on the left. Select it and adjust the format settings.

Most likely your TV is expecting a lower grade of audio. Default Mac setting is 96000 Hz. Try going down to 48000. You're probably OK at 2ch-24bit, but you can adjust that down too as you experiment to see what your TV expects.

You will have no volume control from the Mac, but your TV volume control should work.

I have a newish MBP (bought Aug 2011 but had shipped with Snow Leopard, currently running Lion) and I bought a new 27" Samsung Syncmaster monitor that I can't get to play sound. I tried to follow your instructions, but when I go to System Preferences > Sound>Sound Effects tab, I don't get a choice for my monitor. The only choice I get is for the internal speakers of the MBP. It's the same on the middle 'Output' tab as well. The video is working fine.

I am using 13.3 MBP with OS X 10.7.2, 27" Samsung Syncmaster SA550 monitor, and MDP-HDMI adapter.

Any help would be great!

I'm not able atm to hook up to my TV to be able to walk you exactly through the steps (working away from Home abroad) but first make sure that you follow my instructions for MIDI sound above, and that you can see your monitor in those dialog boxes. Then go through the instructions for sys pref > sound > sound effects. Finally log out and then log back in. If you still have no sound then its a tech call to apple or drop in at one of their shops I'm afraid.

Have you tried connecting the cable between the PC and TV and then looking at System Preferences > Display ?

There will be 3 tabs on that window, I think you need to be on the Display tab and it should show your TV. If it doesn't then check the box in the bottom right hand of the window that says "Detect Displays". Once it has detected the display then you can set the other HDMI details in the midi sound app as described above.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your promt reply!

I think you misunderstood the question however. What I meant was my TV displays my Macbook Pro perfectly fine. There is no sound however. I'll quantify it so we can all refer back easily:

1. TV displays Macbook fine

2. No sound however

3. TV is displayed as an output for Display under Macbook

4. TV is NOT displayed as an output for Sound under Macbook

Hope that clarified it. If not, in short... I get no sound and the HDMI is not an option on output on either Midi Utility or Sound under System Preferences.

Thank you. 🙂

Hmm I'm assuming that your MBP is a newish model made after 2010 in which case you will need to take it into an Apple store / Apple authorised repair shop or if still under Applecare try telephone support.

If it is pre 2010 then it will NEVER work as Apple didn't build HDMI audio support into those models. To get sound from those models into your TV you will have to use a 3.5mm jack to phono (red and white connectors) and plug that into your laptop headphone socket with the red and white phono connectors into your TV.

Madness I know since audio is carried natively by mini displayport but Apple figured no one would want to use it this way.

Frankly Apple made this way too complicated even for models that do support this. Not one of their better implementations to be sure.

It's relieving and frankly annoying to learn that this complete PITA of an issue is because Apple engineers decided not to assume people wanted the audio to come out on the TV as well as the video. I feel like a jack@ss, but really? It automatically detects and switches the video output to the TV, but the user has to tell it to push the audio out too, AFTER you connect the HDMI cable?

Works like a champ and SOUNDS great - on my 2006 Sharp Aquos HDMI connection even!

Thank you for providing the solution, Slug.

Verrrry Interesting for several reasons.

I have been using the Moshi adapter on my MBP to connect to my approximately 2006 Sharp Aquos too.

But I cannot get the sound to come out. You seem to have done this. So, Im interested.

I also connect my MBP to a more recent Toshiba with no problem, but when I connect to the Sharp... no sound. My solution was to use the optical output but wjy should I need to????

My MPB is recent enough early 2011 to support audio in the HDMI (earlier version didn't!).

So what is your secret. I have called the nice Apple hardware people ant they say the problem is in the TV. This amy be true since the Sharp has a very early HDMI 1.1 (I think).

But you have had success.

Any suggestions? Remember I can et the HDMI to deliver audio to the Toshiba but not the sharp.

BTW my wife's HP with HDMI works with both video and audi on the sharp. Go figure.

Grateful for any help, .

Barry

Well, hope this helps - it's a Sept 2010 MBP running 10.6.8. I bought a "recent" HDMI video port cable, meaning, in the last 3-5 months. FWIW I had bought a different HDMI cable about a year ago but haven't re-tested the older cable.

I had to connect the cable to obviously an HDMI port (I happened to use INPUT4 this time, on the lower right front of the Aquos);

because the TV was on when I connected it, when I reopened System Preferences and hit Sound, SHARP HDMI magically appeared in the choice list under the center Audio tab.

I selected it there (below it said "no output controls available for this device", just means TV volume rules)

I switched the Aquos' input to Input4, it chatted ;-) with the Mac and duplicated the display out to the TV after a flash

Played a youtube video and lo and behold, high quality sound.

The Aquos is a "late" 2006 model (Q4 06).

On the Aquos' menu, under Option, check HDMI Setup - mine is set to Auto so it auto-detects HDMI input...

that's the only obvious thing I see in the Aquos menu... the Audio settings are default...

I've discovered that, under Lion, the problem is a defect in the OS.

I have my MBP hooked up to a Denon receiver through a DP-to-HDMI adapter. Under the System Prefs / Sound settings for Output, the Denon receiver is shown as an output device and I've selected it. But no sound is delivered to the receiver.

The bug is that "mirror displays" has to be selected under Displays in System Prefs.

You already selected the HDMI as the audio output, and it's not working; that's defective. But even worse is the fact that "mirror displays" isn't a valid workaround, because the resolution of your TV and computer won't match. Therefore there's no way to watch a movie full-screen on your TV while hearing the audio.

What a ridiculous bug.

Sep 7, 2012 3:19 AM in response to mexicanacheese

The bug is even worse: Even if you turn mirroring on, you still won't get sound if the secondary monitor is set to some resolutions. For example, the OS detected that my secondary monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. But with the resolution set that way, there was no sound.

But if I manually changed the resolution to "1080p", the sound suddenly started being delivered.

This is clearly an absolute mess.
