No sound over Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter

I bought a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (http://www.cables2u.co.uk/mini-displayport-hdmi-socket-p-844.html) and this adapter should allow the transmission of both video and audio. Video works fine but no audio is transmitted when I connect my MacBook Air to a HDTV, and there is not even an option to do so under System Preferences > Sound > Output (Internal Speakers is the only option available). Any suggestions?

MacBook Air 11.6 (1.6 GHz, 4GB), Mac OS X (10.6.4)

DisplayPort to HDMI Sound is actually set up by using the MIDI setup utility found in :

Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.

If you purchased an iWires cable direct from Apple the instructions are in the printed booklet that comes in the packaging. Most people don't read this as it's normally the case that when you plug a cable in to anything it just works (VCR, TiVo, Xbox, video camera etc). In this instance Apple are failing to live up to their catch-phrase as final setup is NOT intuitive; "it just DOESN'T work".

The booklet instructions basically say do the following,

Video

System Preferences > Displays. There are 3 tabs in the window; Displays, Arrangement and Color. Be sure you are on the Displays tab. Bottom left of the window tick "Show displays in menu bar" and then bottom right click "Detect Displays".

Now click on the tab named Arrangement. Bottom left of the window tick "Mirror Displays".

You should now only see 2 tabs, Display and Color. Be sure you are on the Displays tab. Select the desired resolution for your TV (probably 1080i). leave all other settings at their default values.

Sound

System Preferences > Sound. There are 3 tabs in the window; Sound Effects, Output and Input. Be sure you are on the Sound Effects tab. Middle of the window select your TV where it says "Play sound effects through:".

Select the middle tab named Output.

Select your TV from the drop-down list next to HDMI, below where it says "Select a device for sound output".

Using either Finder or Launchpad go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.

On the left-hand side of the window you should now see HDMI. In the middle of the window, on the Output tab, where it says "Source:" select your TV from the drop-down list.

This last action below is NOT described in the iWires notes but was required in my case, it may also be required in yours. If you CANNOT see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list on the left, do the following:

Bottom left of the window select the wheel icon with the down-pointing triangle. Make sure that sound output is selected and that you can now see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list of devices.

If you still cannot hear sound, log out of your account and then log back in.

You will now have sound coming out of your TV from your computer 🙂

You may have to do some or all of the above to get sound out of your TV from your computer using the DisplayPort to HDMI cable. On my Aug 2011 MacbookPro I had to do ALL of the above. If you take your laptop to a different TV you will have to do it all again so be warned.

Hope this helps.

I just bought a new adaptor and have it connected to my TV. Video works fine. I've read through all the threads and I am not getting a single option for HDMI audio. I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012, I have checked under audio MIDI and the options are not even located there for HDMI audio. The adaptor supports audio too. The HDMI cable I have supports audio. Under preferences, there's no option for HDMI "output", I'm only given internal speakers output and my Apple TV output. I've tried restarting my system, shut it it down and restarted, logged-off and restarted. NOTHING. !!!!!!! Oh, and I'm running Mavricks with the most recent update.

I have a Belkin Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter that i pug in to my Mac and then plug an HDMI cord the is connected to a Pyle PT590AU, the Pyle is connected to speakers. The only problem is that my Mac won't output sound to them. So now i just have all of this expensive equipment sitting here and I'm still just using the mac speakers. I've tried all the solutions to get sound to output to a TV, and they don't work for this. Please help me!!! - Thanks

i just bought a Belkin Mini port and was having the same issue. But found the problem. Just need to go to the Audio settings of the media player and select the output you want to use, select HDMI and it works. We are currently watching and listening directly on my our tv. I had to reser my TV at some point as it was also causing an issue but that was just a matter of unplug all cables including the power cable and reconnect everything. I tested this with a Sony and Samsung TVs. Hope it works for you too!

Not sure if this is the right place to leave this but I had a similar problem on my Mid-2010 MBP. Sound suddenly stopped playing on my TV. I took some advice from a previous comment and went into Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup and basically did nothing. What I mean is I changed a couple things, changed them right back, and that worked. Sound began playing through my TV again. I can't explain it, but it worked.

If anyone is still looking at this thread, I could use some help. Per the theme: trying to hook MacBook Air to TV. Get picture, sound still plays on the MacBook, not the TV.

I have a mid-2013 MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite. TV is a Sony Bravia R55. From my MBAir, I am connection a Belkin MinDisplayPort to HDMI adapter, connected to an Amazon HDMI cable, to the TV.

Tried the Systems Preferences>>Sounds>>Output>>select a device option. However, I can only see "internal speakers", no matter what I do.

Tried the Finder>>Applications>>Utilities>>Audio MIDI Setup, but again, the only option is "built-in output". Nothing about selecting HDMI or the TV or anything. Someone on here had recommended "Create Mutli-Output Device" from the Audio MIDI Setup window, but that didn't work, either.

Even tried fooling around with the default 44100.0 Hz options, but still nothing.

Any solutions???

VERY late for the train here but I think I see one solution.

Connect your TV via the HDMI adapter and cable.

Open Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.

Click on OUTPUT. You should see HDMI as one option. Click to highlight this.

Find the GEAR at the bottom of the left-hand sidebar. Click this and select Use This Device For Sound Output.

You should be home free.

I have a Sharp Aquos that is connected via the mini display and shows up on the display, however, it does not show up on audio. It only displays the internal speakers. My Mac is a late 2009 model. It worked with my receiver connected with the audio, but now that I changed to a sound bar working via optical I get no sound. My adapter is third party. Could that be the problem or does my Sharp TV require some adjustment so the TV will show in the audio.?????
