Q: No sound over Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter

I bought a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (http://www.cables2u.co.uk/mini-displayport-hdmi-socket-p-844.html) and this adapter should allow the transmission of both video and audio. Video works fine but no audio is transmitted when I connect my MacBook Air to a HDTV, and there is not even an option to do so under System Preferences > Sound > Output (Internal Speakers is the only option available). Any suggestions?

MacBook Air 11.6 (1.6 GHz, 4GB), Mac OS X (10.6.4)

    I have a Sharp Aquos that is connected via the mini display and shows up on the display, however, it does not show up on audio. It only displays the internal speakers. My Mac is a late 2009 model. It worked with my receiver connected with the audio, but now that I changed to a sound bar working via optical I get no sound. My adapter is third party. Could that be the problem or does my Sharp TV require some adjustment so the TV will show in the audio.?????
