Dock feature or bug

When the Application, Documents and Downloads folders in the Dock are empty they display the appropriate symbol on them. When there is an item in the folder, the symbol disappears and is replaced by an image of the first item in the folder or is blank if the first item is a folder within. Is this something I can turn off or is it a permanent 'feature' of Snow Leopard?
