Need help converting ithmb pics to jpg

We just got back from vacation and most of our pictures were taken with the iPhone4. The problem is, when we moved the pics to our PC, they won't open. Any idea how to convert them? From what I've read in a few online posts, I'd have to download at least two programs to do it.

I created a very basic GUI to help convert the folder with the iThmbs in

http://www.4shared.com/file/jw7pGjQo/iThmbConvGUI.html

Copy this GUI executable in to the same folder as the iThmbConv.exe

Choose the folder with your iThmb/s in and off it goes.

Actually, .ithmb files are not .jpegs. They are RAW format, which is why you cannot view them on your pc. Keith's software only works on MAC OS but here is the only thing that will work for a pc. Don't waste your money on anything else, because they will not work. This is freeware and it's a very small command line program. You can download it for free here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/50707723/37b8a1ad/iThmbConv.html

Now follow these steps:
1. Create a new foder called Thumbs as a subdirectory of your hard drive. I assume this your C: drive. (example C:\Thumbs)
2. Copy all the .ithmb files into this folder.
3. Download the iThmbConv program file directly into this folder.
4. Now, on your pc desktop, go to Start, Run and enter cmd in the box. Hit okay.
5. When the black screen command prompt comes on, type cd.. at the end of the prompt line. Press Enter.
6. The next line should only show C:> If not, enter cd.. again to just show C:>
7. Now type *cd Thumbs* When you press enter, the next line should be C:Thumbs>
8. Assuming one of your .ithmb picture files is named T100. (They are all T and a number, so I'm using T100 as an example) Now type *iThumbConv T100.ithmb*
You should now see a few copies of your original .ithmb file in the Thumbs folder in a format that is viewable on your pc such as .jpg or whatever.
Repeat step #8 for each additional .ithmb file you want to convert. Then, you can ditch the the copies you don't need.

bmuccio,
The other two are both right, but Allan didn't give you all of the help you need on getting the jpgs and Diva's answer would drive me nuts converting one by one. The key is to not use the Itunes interface from your PC to transfer the files, but use Windows Explorer. The iPhone will be connected just like any other camera would be and you can access it as such. I run windows XP and had to actually right click on the iPhone device and select "Get pictures" from the menu. Final item of note is that any video you took comes in as a .MOV file, so those are pretty standard as well. Not sure why I-Tunes doesn't just copy them in jpg in the first place, but I hope this helps (drove me nuts for a few hours until I figured this out as well).

iTunes has nothing whatsoever to do with importing photos from a digital camera including from the iPhone's Camera Roll. Photos in the iPhone's Camera Roll are not touched during the iTunes sync process except for being included with the iPhone's backup which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. Even if iTunes were involved with importing photos from the iPhone's Camera Roll, the files would not be converted during the import or transfer process. I've never heard of such a thing - the file format being changed or converted when photos are imported from a digital camera.

I got the same message, then realized the command is listed wrong, it should be ithmbconv (exclude the 'u'), also, creating a batch file is the way to go, you can convert hundreds of files quickly, here's a quick method, still all within the same directory, first create a tree by typing:
C:\thumbs tree /a /f > tree.txt <enter>
this will create a list of all .ithmb files in the directory, open this file with notepad, delete the header and footer information, find and replace all ' T' with 'ithmbconv T' (make sure you find the correct number of spaces before the T) save this file, change to .bat extension, then from command line type:
C:\thumbs tree <enter> and wala, hundreds of jpg's created, proud of myself, can you tell?

The software I created is compressed using UPX which is sometimes incorrectly detected as a Trojan by some anti virus program's ( mostly AVG and Mcafee ) I created the GUI using AutoIt which uses UPX as its compression during compiling. I also had this problem with other utilities that I have created for the schools I've worked in when they had Mcafee installed but Sophos scans and pccillin detect zero viruses in my software. I created this GUI just to help out the guys using ithmb converter at that time. I used 4shared as it is free, I do not like viruses and being an IT network manager I have seen and removed many different types. If you are detecting a Trojan it is more than likely a false positive but websites can be hacked and viruses can be attached to downloads. Try a different antivirus software when downloading the file to compare results. AVG sometimes creates false positives when scanning files that are still downloading but will scan the same completed file as OK. Hope this is helpful and I hope you can use this file as intended.

Okay, so after spending almost a comlete day on this and in the hope that someone else may want to manage their photo library in their own way and not the very limited manner in which Apple Softrware does, plus so that whoever comes accross this post doesn't end up spending nearly 1/10th of the time, I am providing my own reply.

First, the iThmbConv utility has since changed locations and can now be found by going to this link:

http://www.mediafire.com/?ia75l954427me5s

Howver, the GUI created by Spudgun3000 is still located at the www.4shared.com site, unfortunately, i could not get the IThmbConv command line to even reccognize one of my files in my chache, probably becuase after reading why this utility was even created in the first place seems a little backwards in the logicical sense as well as UI sense. Mainly, at the time there were only a few devices that ran the iOS, but after time and the advent of the iPhone/iPad coming out just about yearly with a new model, I'm sure that Anywhowould rethink the way he would have built his program, even if at all (anyway, I can surely appreciate his determinedness as well as his desire to try and solve the issue of how a user can retrieve his backed-up photos withou the use of his device).

However, if you need to get photos off your iPod and back onto your Mac or PC you have probably realized ny now that the iPod stores photos in ithmb files. These files contain all the photo data for your iPod to display but can not be read by regular photo programs.

The following program reads your device and converts them to regular photos before iTunes does it's mixmash sorting of putting everything everywhere on your PC so that it's ilmost impossible for a regular end user like you or me to locate what has been saved where....*

http://www.fileguru.com/apps/iPod_Access_Photo_for_Windows or go to their direct site http://www.findleydesigns.com/

So while this program and the following may cost money (if you want a full functioning program, in which I gave up on trying to do this for free about 3 hours ago) it will at least show you what photos you have and where they are in reference to the iPad photo database Cache

http://www.ithmbconverter.com/

This second program seems to be pretty well put together with ease in understanding the GUI and the functionality, so for only $19.95 it seems like it is the best bargain (unless you want to wait for Anywho to configure his command line utiltiy.....jejejeje
