iPhone 4 Contacts Disappeared After Receiving Text Message

This morning when I woke up to a text message it showed the full name. Literally just about an hour later I received another message from the same person, but it only showed the phone number. When I went into the Contacts I saw it was completely empty. All of my favorites and recent calls are there but they're just the phone numbers, no names or anything else. How did this happen? I didn't change anything and I have no idea what to do.

I've got the same problem too. Yesterday I had problems with an app crashing so restarted my phone and this morning I found that all my contacts are gone.

For some reason my iCloud was set not to synch contacts and I don't think I have a backup on my laptop as I'm very wary of itunes after it's been known to wipe everything on my ipod in the past.

Like others who've posted I'm still on iOS 5.1.1.

The exact same thing happened to me!!!! I woke up at 2 am to find my phone repeatedly crashing. When I was able to turn it back on everything was there and current EXCEPT ALL MY CONTACTS ARE GONE!!!!!! I don't use iCloud and my last backup aparently was December 2011. I am not sure what to do. I don't want to lose all my other info from the last year. I just want my contacts back.

Glad to hear I am not the only one but wish I could fix it. Been searching all day for a fix.

Same thing happened to me.. Went to bed. Woke up tired opening text app and it kept crashing. Everything else worked fine. Turned the phone off and on with the two buttons and pouf no more contacts. Don't use ICloud either contacts are supposed to be kept on the phone anyways. Iphone 4 still on version 5.1.1.

Really tired of this apple crap with the syncing and delivering sub par products and everything. Switching to Android as soon as Samsung S4 comes out

TIME FOR A RELIABLE SAMSUNG PHONE

This seems to be an Apple problem, not a carrier. I have seen people from Europe experiencing the same problem As we have seen in the past, Applejust doesn't care about, it cares about our pockets.

The only way to make do something is to go on social media and let everyone now that we are moving to Samsung.

My contract is due next month andi have already lost money by lisong my contacts.

I AM GOING TO GET A SAMSUNG.

Same thing for me! I forgot my phone at home and it is this time i lost all my contact list.

Also, the computer where i have the Itunes for this Iphone was close until 2 weeks when it's happen.

And, like several of you, I didn't configure any automatic updates and all icloud things except photos was unactivated.

I think that all my contacts cannot be retreived without backup in cloud on in my case with itunes. But, I just eant to know why and how it was happenned. I dont want to lost my contacts again.

I went to Istore to ask questions about that and nobody knows what i am talking about !!!

I wish that Apple will take this problem seriously and inform us what was happen!

I use OS 5.1.1.

This also happened to me this morning. My apps would not open so I shut down my phone and when I turned it back on, all of my contacts I had input directly into the phone were gone. The only thing left is the phone number in my text messages. My contacts are linked to Exchange for work and I do not use Icloud for contacts. Not to mention all of the contacts that are lost who I had not been texting with!

Clearly this is a problem that has escalated over the last day or so, and Apple wants $19.99 to answer a support question. Ridiculous.

I have a solution...

Look for "Dump Apple" on Facebook, if we get too many likes we might get to do something about it.

Yeh, best of luck with that.

Apple, by it's very culture, respond to constructive feedback - not whinging on social media sites. But hey, let us know how that goes for you.

Update: 1 "Like" - Blimey.

How about we all update to iOS 6 and call it a day.

I think you're onto something here. I have an iphone 4S (running version 5.1.1) and updated Facebook yesterday (no other apps updated). This morning my apps started crashing upon opening so I turned my phone off and back on again (I've tried this three times since) and when I opened my texts, noticed all the numbers had no names against them. I now have NO CONTACTS listed in my phone at all, although if I search for someone's name their texts will appear in the search details but when I select the message only the number appears, with no name beside it. I do not use icloud at all but sync to itunes for backup. I haven't tried syncing my phone yet as all of my contacts are still listed on my pc and I don't want to risk losing them all.

Any help Apple as this is a MAJOR problem?

I had been holding off on an update because I did not have enough space on my phone, and did not wish to have to change maps and YouTube and all that with the upgrade since I've heard such horrible things. I'd not been updating apps either because I had to put in a new credit card no. Well I finally cleared the space on my phone, updated my billing info and started updating apps. I've since updated to the latest software, but either way an app update on an older software should not do that to your contacts but it appears to have done so.

Furthermore, the software update did not do anything.

I'm just lucky that I'm not one of the people that has lost money from losing their contacts. I feel for those people. You should essentially be able to run whatever version you want and not have your contacts disappear. I've had an iPhone of some sort since 2009 and I've held out on updates before. It would be different if there was a known virus out and someone did not update and got the virus. But this is a clear issue of lack of software testing on someone's part whether it be Apple or a specific app, it is not and should not be an issue of not updating software. That in my opinion is putting it on the consumer. It is not an irreasonable expectation to be able to update an app and not lose your contacts.

Rory, why do you spread yourlies here?

Upgrading to IOS6 does not bring back thecontacts andshortens iPhone4 battery life significantly.

What Appleis doingis the least imoral, but that doesn't seem to bother you that much.

Wait and see when Apple gets sued, I'd like to see you again in these forums when that happens.

I have 5 iPhonesbut in a couple of weeks they will become Galaxy Note II.

Good luck with your deceptive tactics.

I'm sorry, I missed the part where I was spreading lies with deceptive tactics.

I, like anyone else on these forums mate, am here to try and help. I merely drew (quite accurately) the conslusion that this is an issue that is predominantly experienced on 5.1.1.

I don't believe that I stated (or implied) that updating to iOS 6 would bring these contacts back. I just see it as a way that people could avoid this issue in the future.

All i said was - "just maybe, an update would be a good place to start". Where's the deception in offering a troubleshooting step.

"this is a cheap attempt by Apple to push it's iPhone 5 Sales." - Because they're really suffering in that regard aren't they?

I really hope that despite your frustration with this issue (understandable), that you see that I am trying to help you guys come up with a solution.

From another forum thread. I had the same experience this morning that everyone else did. I tried this, and it worked perfectly:

Go to settings/icloud on your phone. Make sure you are logged with your apple id.

Contacts should be on, click on it to turn it off and choose keep (even though you show no contacts)

When the process is done go ahead and turn on contacts again, choose merge. All your contacts should show up if you had a previous backup to icloud.

This happened to me this morning.

I was in the middle of texting and after receiving one, my messages kept crashing so I turned off my phone and all my contacts are gone. Very annoying as I use contacts for my business.

I don't use iCloud, and updated Facebook maybe last week but not updated any apps today

My nearest apple store is Newcastle/Manchester don't really fancy the 2 hour trip each way to be told they don't know what I'm going on about. Any solutions?
