Every time I try and type in pages I just get the 'donk, donk' noise that you usually get when a dialogue is still open behind the main window. Have tried different templates, restarting pages, restarting computer but no joy.
Any ideas?

Ah, that looks like it then. It says (Page Layout) in brackets after the file name. Can't find any way of switching in the menus though. Please advise...
Has it worked before? When did the problem start? Have you installed any third party application near to the problem starting? Have you updated Pages and Snow Leopard to the latest versions? Combo update? anything else just before the problem started??
No change that I can think of. I avoid installing new software that I don't need incase of problems like this arising. I use pages on a regular basis – several times a week at least. All versions are current. I'm running OSX 10.6.4 and Pages 4.0.4.
Create a new user account and try Pages in that account. If Pages does work as it should you have a problem in your old account. It could be the plist file or something else
If it doesn't work in the new account either it is Pages that isn't working and you have to delete iWork and install again.
No Ben, There are two types of documents in Pages, word processing or page layout. It tells you which one you have if you read to the right of the document name.
Show Layout is something else.
When you pen a new document through the Template chooser you'll see in the left column that the templates are divided in Word processing and Page layout and maybe My templates for those you have created yourself.
