Ipod wont charge when connected by USB

My ipod doesn't charge when i connect via USB but will charge on Firewire..?? is this normal??

PowerBk G4 15" 1GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.4.3)

What generation of iPod do you have? Only the 3rd, 4th and 5th generation can charge over USB 2.0. Also make sure the port you are plugging into is USB 2.0 - it cannot charge over USB 1.0.

I assume that you are referring to the ipod being plugged into your Mac when charging. The Mac cannot be in "sleep" mode if you want to charge the ipod by plugging into USB. However the Mac can be in "sleep" if you plug into the Firewire port. The reason is that the FireWire port is powered while the USB is not when the Mac is asleep.

BTW you can charge via the USB 1 and not just USB 2. I have a 4G ipod that will charge when connect to my older iBook (2002 model) that only has USB 1.
