Mac Pro shuts down immediately

When I start my Mac Pro by pressing the power button the fans kick in and it sound like it's about to start for a second, then it immediately switches itself off. This happens time after time every morning. After unplugging everything from the back and plugging it all back in again I can often get it to start up, eventually, then it's usually fine for the rest of the day. Next morning, same problem. It's very disconcerting.

This problem has only started to happen fairly recently and I'm pretty sure the warranty has expired. Can anybody help?

Hello,

Not a direct answer, but I never find out where this issue came from... Finnaly I did not replace the power supply as the Apple Care Support did not agree to do so at this time. The only thing I finnaly suspected causing this trouble was a usual 3G iPhone USB dock. Since I removed it this issue disapear. I do not have it anymore for months now (I've also upgraded to 10.8, with a SSD drive, meaning I have one more drive in my Mac Pro, so finnaly it should not be the Power Supply on my side)

Good Luck

Eric

Well, I'm in the same boat as most of you: my Mac Pro 3,1 tower (dual 3.2 Ghz processors, 12GB RAM, 10.6) keeps shutting down. I've already replaced the graphics card, Power Supply via Tekserve, replaced 8GB of RAM I purchased from OWC (which was shown by the Apple Genius at Manhasset to be faulty and overheating) with 8GB from Crucial (recommended by the operator at 1-800-MY-APPLE.) The other 4GB is Apple OEM and Apple no longer sells memory for this model. I've also thoroughly cleaned it out and honestly am quite discouraged that other people have replaced their Power Supplies and solved their problem. The only things I haven't replaced are the 1TB boot disk and the logic board. Right now, I'm hoping that at the WWDC next month, Tim Cook FINALLY announces when the new towers will be coming out because I'm out of ideas as to what to do with my machine (at least, ideas that don't involve exorcisms or kerosene.)

After last two years , after a long time expended with this forum and close with Apple , also expending time and a lot of money , after heard a lot of wrong sugestions, the reality is : nobody here , solved this problem without replacing de logic board and/or power supply . I decided to replace all my logic boards for MacPro early 2008 and backplane boards for Mac Pro early 2009 and mid 2010 (yes , they are with problems too) . Well , all of you expected is , that all my problems has been solved , yes they were for a time , but not enough as the old macintosh that you was running for 8 to 10 years with no problem . I have around 15 MacPro early 2008 that all have been replaced the logic board almost one time and 10 from early 2009 in the same way , more 12 from mid 2010 in the same way . With a lot of problems and still working with Apple , I discovered that for the MacPro early 2008 the problem is a voltage regulator in logic board and for 2009 and 2010 is a chipset that needs reballing , but I can't get find , after discorery and localited the problems I tried , a company or a person that knew how to fix this problems , after trying a lot of companies in Brazil , I tried in USA , but no success too . Again , the reality is : Apple is manufacturing bad products and you have to protect your investiments with Apple Care and all times that you have problems have to wait for a week or more , for a solution at Apple Assistence

My early 2008 mac pro has started to exhibit symptons of random shutting off this week.

so i let it stay off over night, and today cleaned out the dust and swapped places of the ram... and now i can't get it to start at all.

ive tried every configuration of ram (i have 3 pairs, so trying each seperately and some combined and all three) and the furthest ive gotten to is the apple logo.

reading everywhere online and here, im thinkin that its most porbably a PSU issue (that's why it would randomly shut off on me all week, right?).

but now i can't even get it to the apple logo, just shuts off right away. so could i have knocked something out while cleaning it? or damanged my ram? or is it still most likely just a PSU issue?

in one configuration when i turned on, one of the lights on the ram risers came back on. so that means bad config right? ive since tried other variations like i said above.... and still can't get a boot to logo or even grey screen.

i was convinced that its a PSU issue until i read someone on here that said it didn't fix it for them.

i'm located in Dubai and all the service centers here don't have stock of the PSU, and since ramadan started yesterday... i'd have to wait over 2 weeks to order it in. i can potentially buy online on ebay.... but given my sytems above... does it sound like it truly is a PSU issue... or could i trouble shoot further to check if its a ram issue?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank-you

Hi,

Sorry to here that... unfortunately I was never able to find out really the reason of this issue... but it mostly disappeared... I'm still using +12 hour a day this mac pro (till the new one ???). More than one year ago I've noticed a damaged Apple RAM. However the problem was already "gone". So I update, add extra RAM and add an extra SSD drive. This really boost this mac and since I did not have this issue anymore... except from times to times... but no more than five times a year... Also I've unconnected my USB 3G's iphone dock (look at my previous messages/history) Maybe after all this was a RAM issue... or... ?

Good luck,

E.

I am having the same problems. MacPro early 2008 won't boot. Shutsdown at startup.

Temperature was an issue. When cold it would not boot. Heating the system with an heater worked most of the times.

I think the PSU is faulty.

To look at the PSU, I removed it. After putting it all together again and leaving it to rest (unplugged), my problems were gone.

It booted and I'm happy. (for now)

Maybe the PSU doesn't like the powercord. There are some currents still flowing (remenber that when replacing parts you have to unplug the system!!).

So I will test it. When shutting down I wil unplug it also.

W'll see . . . .

Something very strange appear, this issue was gone for over year or so... an it appears again in early september and if I think back it was almost every year at the same time... I am very confused!

The only think that changes was —as my Nvidia GT8800 has stop working since august— I had to upgrade with an ATI Radeo HD 5770 1024Mo. I assume this card use a bit more power, but if I look back at this issue, in general it (re)appears in autmun every year... so strange! 😕

I did not know that computers may have seasonal troubles. The only difference now is that I sometimes have a total freeze and I need to reboot myself... ot it reboots itself several time.

Unplugging-Replugging the powercord help me for the day... but who knows maybe in spring It will be fine again ?

I'm tired of such problems and I'm quite angry with applecare services who did not change this PSU during the warranty period.

Waiting to see this new MacPro, hopefully not too late.

What do you think of the new mac pro? I just bought mac pro 2,1 and have had it for less than one month when I start having issues similar to those described on this board. At first it wasn't too bad, it would mostly restart itself while I had left the computer on and I was in the other room I would hear the mac startup sound. After a few days of this, it got more frequent. I have followed all of the steps shown on this forum. Now I am wondering if this could be part of the reason that the early mac pros, 1,1 and 2,1 are selling for around $500. This seemed like a good deal until now I have this problem. Getting an new PSU on a $500 tower doesn't add up. So now I have ordered another $500 mac pro and I haven't even recieved it yet but I am already regretting my decision. I will be $1100 into old mac pros when I could get a 5,1 for $1800 and probably have much better performance.

Just one update on my side... as this problem was getting really worse two weeks ago, I tried to uninstall all my RAM modules and clean them a little, then reinstall everything.

Since then, the issue is gone (for a while I guess), so maybe it's just a faulty RAM and not the PSU?, I will try another AHT later (apple hardware test).

I don't know yet about this new upcomming MacPro, but it's also a really different hardware...

SRM: that was the dilemma I faced. I thought of replacing my malfunctioning 2,1 Mac Pro tower with another used Mac Pro tower, but then thought, what if I'm inheriting someone else's headache? And why is this price so low? That's when I broke down and bought a new 12-core 5,1 machine.

The kicker? I gave my 2,1 tower to my cousin and he's used it for four months now with only ONE shut down. I'm wondering if the issue all along was the electricity in my apartment. Sounds stupid, but I can't overlook that possibility, even though nothing else in my apartment has behaved erratically (well, excpet for me...)
