Apple TV Could not connect to the server

My ATV2 is telling me it cannot connect to the server!
What server? It seems to connect fine to my computer's iTunes and it also plays previews of movies and tv shows from the rental store fine. So why cant it actually start downloading a rental?
It's pretty sad that there's no help or further details on the ATV2. It just says try again.
I hope Apple doesn't start screwing up the iTunes server for ATV2 the way they are always screwing up access to their MobileMe servers.

I have exactly the same problem. It started two days ago once I started to stream a movie. It deleted the movie, even though I had another 46 hours to watch it, and has stopped me renting anything else. I tried connections etc and even a network test but to no avail. I'm all out of ideas, bar visiting an apple store.

Apple support seem no help, got me to reset all settings and then said "Well I just don't know..." when it still didn't sign on. There seems to be a problem with the new software update and it's ability to send data to the apple servers to verify account information. There is no problem with router settings as I use an Airport Extreme, and it WAS working yesterday before I updated software. With 1.5 TB of video sitting in my computer and no Home Sharing I have a hundred dollar hockey puck and no video on my 55' TV. Apple WILL (I'm sure) fix this ASAP with another update, or simply reset the server to accept new data... if not, well I'm sure they just don't care. The guy I talked to sure didn't!

copied from another post by me....

Quick workaround I JUST thought of and tried.... Went to computer and started Doctor Who from iTunes, and then sent to Apple TV using Airplay. Seems to be streaming ok that way but NOT the way I would want. My wife is now having her game slow down as iTunes is processing and sending instead of the network simply sending data to ATV2. Works, but not elegant.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but after a few frustrating days with the same problem - reset, restore, restart router, etc. all to no avail - I finally reset my itunes password and found that passwords now require a capital letter and number, my old password didn't have both. Not sure if this changed somewhere along the way with software updates or if just resetting the password did the trick, but we're back in business.

Hope this helps.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with that problem. I have not been able to connect to the iTunes store from my Apple TV since I updated to 4.4.2 on Friday. I can't rent, buy or see purchases (first time ever).

It tries to access to the iTunes store and eventually says that it can't access the server and to please try later.

I contacted Apple via e-mail. Their response was not helpful so far. I'm wondering if they are aware that they have a server issue.

Good luck to all of us.
