iMovie '11 is not always saving changes

Anyone else having issue of changes not being saved by iMovie? Any workarounds? I lost hours of work because of this... so I am very... upset... so if anyone else has issue please speak up... and solutions are very much appreciated.

There appears still to be no fix for this issue. I have done software updates, and it's still happening. Text disappears randomly. C'mon Apple, we need a useable film editiing program here! If you're going to offer it you need to fix issues like these, or at least respond. Well, if you want your customers to be satisfied, that is.

I'm bot buying Fonal Cut X, I'll find a work around for this. Maybe just not use text at all.

I am extremely annoyed. I have one of these magical apple computing machines. It has iMovie 11 and edits videos pretty well. You know, it's to be expected that applications will have bugs. It is also expected that bugs get fixed in a timely manner. What I can't fathom is WHY HAS THIS THREAD BEEN RUNNING FOR 3+ YEARS AND NO FIX.

I am a very technical user, have done software development, more comfortable on the command line than in the gui... and have no problems with the workarounds suggested... What is unbelievably frustrating is sacrificing hours of sleep tinkering with a project to make it perfect, closing the project trusting in the magical no-save feature (and possibly a fail-safe error message if it really didn't save), then waking up in the morning to find HOURS WASTED SINCE IMOVIE DID NOT SAVE MY CHANGES.

I thought, "relax, there is something you are not doing right, the internets will prove it...", but alas, it is a silly little bug that has been happening for years now. Years.

Well... I'm going through the apple bug report hoops, just needed to vent. I'm better now but have lost some serious respect for apple. It's unfortunate, but a fact of the software development lifecycle that at least in the short term, maintenance and bug fixes do little to impress shareholders.

I found something very interesting regarding iMovie. Here is what I did to overcome this face shifting title saving problem.

I launched a new Finder window then I went to Applications folder and located iMovie icon. There, I right-clicked on iMovie and chose Show Package Contents from the pop-up. This got me to Contents folder and, in it, I located Resources folder and open it up. This folder contains sensitive files. There is a vast range of files from TIFF, audio, video and, a vast variety of Quartz Composition files in this folder. All the transitions, titles and effects Quartz stuff required by iMovie are in this folder. Next, I made sure the files are listed by Kind in the Finder window and I started to check each and every Quartz file in the Cover Flow view, w/o opening them. In Finder Cover Flow view, the Quartz thumbs, play a couple frames and then stop. As I moved w/arrow keys from file to file, I noticed that some of them do not display correctly; they had this random puzzle like looking thumbs. So, I realized that many of those Quartz transitions and effects for iMovie, were created over the years with various versions of Quartz Composer and, their thumbnail has some trouble rendering in the Finder window. To make sure this theory is true, I had to re-save the Quartz files by changing Sharing & Permission Privilege of the Contents folder for myself to Read & Write to it. Opening each and every Quarts file, is a very time consuming process but the results are rewarding. The thumbnails are displaying correctly and finally, iMovie save it ALL.

Before jumping to conclusion that this is it, please verify this method. I did this on two computers of mine and iMovie recovered in save functionality.

Now I am exploring similar issues seen at GarageBand, iPhoto and, every application that is using Quartz.

The latest update still doesn't fix this title problem. After spending 4 hours rmaking final adjustments mainly on titles within a project and they were erased. It's frustrating because I've updated these titles 3-4 times already. I'm aware of the problem and never try to quit iMovie when working on a project, however it forced my hand. After completing everything I tried to export the movie. It then stated that iMovie needs more memory so to quit and restart. Therefore, I HAD to restart the app and because of this lost another 4 hours of work. My Mac mini has 16 GB of RAM and at the time had 10GB free! Shame on me for thinking Apple may have actually fixed the problem a year later. This is the reason I took a year off from iMovie. What a dissappointment.

I don't know if this will work for others but here is my "solution" to this problem.

I work on small to medium sized video projects so before closing the program I can afford to duplicate the project I'm working on. For some bizarre reason this causes iMovie to _identify_ and [forcibly?] save all unsaved changes, including titles, before it makes the copy, leaving me with a fully saved project as well as with a numbered copy that serves me as a fast versioning system. You could simply delete the duplicate if you're not interested in keeping it.

Giving up hope on Apple on this I hope this works for and helps others

Thanks gualo,

I've seen that workaround and use it now, will see if it will working for me. (I'm working on a video project of 3 hours SD based on a footage of 8 hours.)

But I maintain that the current situation is the presence of a dramatic bug (3 years old) in the product that needs correction from Apple.

I don't knwo how to excalade it outside this forum? So if someone can do it... thanks
