Typing with French accents

I just made the leap from PC's to the Mac world.
On my PC I can add French to my language settings and easily switch my keyboard to type in French with all the accents. Your keyboard essentially changes to a French keyboard just by selecting FR on your task bar. No awkward key combinations; you just type as normal - but now on the French keyboard. To switch back you select EN. Tres simple.
In researching how to do the same on my MacBook Pro - I only find articles talking about holding down the option key while hitting another key, and then after that you hit the actual key you want accented.
There must be a easier way. I can't believe something so simple on a PC would actually be harder on a Mac.
Say it ain't so. PLEASE.
