Screen Rotate on IPhone

Is this always in the same apps or different apps? Does it sometimes rotate and sometimes not in the same app?

Not all apps are programmed to support screen rotation, so if they don't rotate when you rotate the iPhone it may just be that the particular app doesn't support rotation.

The Messages app supports rotation and I've just tested mine. I can rotate it at any point during reading or writing a text message.

The rotation lock isn't turned on is it?

You'll see a padlock with a round arrow at the top-right of the screen if it is..

You have to "bang it"? That's not good. No banging is required to get the screen to rotate - just gently turn it from landscape to portrait.

If you've been banging the phone a lot, maybe the orientation sensor is damaged. If a reset doesn't help I'd suggest taking it into an Apple Store.

The screen rotation lock is accessed by double-clicking the home button and swiping to the right at the bottom. It's the left-most icon.

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

Keep holding the buttons... it may take as long as a minute. The slider should go away to a black screen (keep holding) and then you'll see the logo (let go).

Just a silly question... when you rotate the phone, are you holding it mostly flat (so the screen is parallel to the floor) or do you hold it up and tip it over?

The sensor doesn't detect you spinning it into landscape if it remains nearly flat/parallel to to floor. Does that make sense?
