Network Tethering refuses to show USB iPhone Adapter

Hello all,

I'm trying to configure my iPhone 3GS to do network tethering with my MBP. I've tried it on another MBP (10.6.4) and it works like a charm: I turn on tethering on the 3GS, plug in the USB and voilà, a USB iPhone adapter appears in the networking adapter. Super simple.

On my other MBP, I have all the latest patches (10.6.5, latest iTunes, etc.). However, the "USB iPhone" adapter refuses to appear, so the tethering doesn't work.

Why would the USB iPhone adapter refuse to appear? What would prevent my tethering from working?

Thanks!

Whatever it is that makes the OS recognise the USB iPhone, it doesent work automatically all the time.

This seems to fix the problem for me. And I've been able to repeat it on different computers.
If you are still having problems getting your iPhone recognized for USB tethering, try this.

1) Run the Network Setup Assistant by either:
A) Click "Assist me.." at the bottom of the Network Systems Preference panel
or
B) Launch the app from Harddisk > System > Library > CoreServices > Network Setup Assistant

2) You'll make a new location setting. Give it any name, perhaps "USB Tethering", and hit Continue.

3) Choose "I use a DSL modem to connect to the Internet". Click Continue.

4) Click Continue again.

If USB tethering is enabled, you should be able to surf the web via your iPhone connection now.
