Playing sound through HDMI

I have a new white macbook running snow leopard, and when I connect it to my tv using an HDMI cable, all sounds on the computer play through the tv except VLC. Youtube, iChat, iTunes, all play through the tv, but if I try to watch a movie with VLC, the sound comes out of my macbook.
