Keychain firstaid

I have had problems with my keychain which prevents safari downloading and other problems. I have run keychain firstaid and get the following:

Other posts suggest resetting the default keychain which I cannot proceed due to the message +"Could not write to the file. It may have been opened with insufficient access privileges".+

Is the only way round this a clean install of Snow Leopard?

Was your user migrated from another Mac? It sounds like the user ID was 501 on the previous Mac but is not 502.

You should be able to fix this with commands in the Terminal utility. Launch Terminal, then type these commands, terminating each one with the "return" key:

cd Library/Preferences
ls -ln com.apple.*.plist

(In the last commands the letters "l" are lower-case letters "L".)

Oddly, I have no file com.apple.security.plist in my user's Library/Preferences folder.

I'd expect to see that all the files have a user ID (the third "field" in the output) of 502. If you see any with a user ID of 501, that's what's causing your problem. If all the files have a third field of 501 or 502, then it should be fairly safe to run this command:

sudo chown 501 com.apple.*.plist

You'll be prompted for your administrative password. This operation should be safe, but it would be prudent to back up your system before running it.

Hi William (again!)
I have run all the terminal commands you suggested which returns the above:

After I restart I still get requests that Mac OS and safari require "the loginkeychain".

On running Keychain firstaid after your suggestions the repair still failed as follows:

Apologies for giving you advice that was flawed in two ways:

- The "sudo" command should have specified 502, not the 501 that was already there.
- You should also run similar commands on ~/Library/Keychains:

cd ~/Library/Keychains
sudo chown 502 *.keychain

I'm continuing to have problems with the keychain where applications such as mail, safari itunes have not updated keychain info and ask for login passwords.

All of thepasswords in keychain are dated from 2007 with new ones added only since I did the above changes. I have tried resetting the default Keychainbut can't as I get the message: +Unable to obtain authorization for this operation.+

You might try having the Keychain Access utility do a "Keychain First Aid" operation. That option is under the "Keychain Access" menu.

It seems that you still have a problem with proper ownership of your files. Try this command in a Terminal session, where the "l"s are lower-case letter "L"s and the symbol before "grep" is a "vertical bar":

ls -l -R -n | grep 501

That will show you any files within your home folder hierarchy that are owned by "501" instead of by you ("502"). Unfortunately, since that "grep" command will filter out headings for directories that you own, it may not show you where those files are. If you see any files owned by "501", you'll need to do a little research to locate them. Spotlight may be able to help.

I've tried the terminal command as you suggest which returns 100s of files with 501 in the third field. What do I do with these?

It would probably be a good idea to change the owner of those files to your new user ID. The safest way to do that is probably to use the Finder menu option File -> Get Info on one of those files, click on the lock to authenticate, click on the "plus" sign at the bottom to add yourself, then click on the gear icon and select "Make (you) the owner". For a large number of files that could take quite a while.

You could use a "chown" command in a Terminal session, but done incorrectly, that could make your Mac unbootable. If you're interested in that approach, ask for details.

If I could safely do the chown command in terminal I would as there are so many files to change. What would I need to do and what are the precautions?

There are at least two things you can do to make such a chown operation safer. (1) Assure that you're positioned in a directory where you're sure you want to change the owner (most safely, within your home directory). (2) Do an "ls" command and save the output to a file so that if you change something that you shouldn't have, you can restore it.

To do the former thing, position yourself somewhere, then issue a "pwd" command. It will show you the current directory. To do the latter thing, issue this command:

ls -l -n > ~/somefilename.txt

where "somefilename" is replaced by something meaningful. That will write the output of the "ls" command to the file somefilename.txt in your home directory.

So here's how I'd proceed:

1) Launch Terminal. In the following commands ignore quotes.
2) Use the Finder to move to a window showing a closed folder containing files with the wrong ownership.
3) In the Terminal window, type the letters "c", "d", and space. (Do not type the quotes or a "return".)
4) Drag the icon of the closed folder into the Terminal window. Press the "return" key.
5) Type the command "pwd" and press the "return" key. Assure that the reported position is what you want.
6) Type the command "ls -l -n". Note that all files are owned by either "501" (the old account) or "502" (your account). If that's not true, do not proceed.
7) Type the command "ls -l -n > ~/somefilename.txt", where you should substitute something appropriate for "somefilename".
8) Type the command "chown -v 502 *" followed by a "return". All the files being given the new owner will be listed. Verify that the expected files are listed.
9) Repeat the command "ls -l -n".
10) If you see that the files have "502 501" in their listings, then issue the command "chgrp -v 502 *", which will change the "group" of the file. Now repeat the last "ls" command again to assure that all the files have "502 502" in their listings.
11) If you're sure that everything is still working, you can at some point delete the file "somefilename.txt" in your home directory.

If you can do that successfully, you can repeat starting with step 2 with another folder. One tip: To avoid having to retype commands and taking the chance of making a mistake, you can use the up-arrow to recall previous commands, then press "return" to execute the command again.

There is a more-powerful way to use the "chown" and "chgrp" commands that can update an entire hierarchy at once. I hesitate to describe that now until you're more comfortable with your ability to use them safely.
