iTunes 10.1 Missing Text

Hi All,

I have problems with missing text in iTunes since 10.0, but it's just gotten much worse since I installed 10.1. Prior to 10.1, text was missing next to the colored legend showing how much storage of different types was in use on a device (e.g. iPad, iPhone, iPod). I would just get the colored box without saying what that box referred to (e.g. Music, Video, etc...) or how much storage was actually in use.

Since installing 10.1, I now have pretty much no text anywhere on that page. On the 'Summary' tab for a device, the only text showing is the headings of each section (e.g. 'iPad', 'Version' and 'Options'. Even the names of the tabs up the top are gone, as is all the text about version, text on buttons, everything.

Also, the tabs at the top of the iTunes Store are gone. There's now just a 'Home' icon, and nothing else (no Music, Apps, Movies, Ping, etc.).

Also, the status window up the top shows the progress bar, but no text.

I assume this is probably something to do with Windows fonts, but it's dramatically changed since 10.1...Help!!!

🙂 No hurry, drive safe.

Definitely worth investigating the registry entries for your system font when you get home, I think, given makeitso's report. (Possibly you might have had more than one font "go off" in this way? Perhaps that may account for how you've got it a bit worse than some of the other folks.)

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts - change Segoe UI to invalid font name
Segoe UI (TrueType) __segoeui.ttf

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\FontSubstitutes\ (new string value)
Segoe UI Tahoma

SUCCESS!!!

The above posts were enough to give me a clue. I have another Win7 x64 machine, and I compared the installed Segoe UI fonts on both systems. Sure enough, there were 6 fonts installed on the 2nd machine, and only 4 on the one with the issue. I was missing Segoe UI (regular), and Segoe UI Bold.

I copied the .ttf files from one machine to the other and right clicked on them and selected 'install'. Fired up iTunes and all text restored.

After looking more closely, most of the text in iTunes is in italics and that font was installed, but anything that was not in italics was missing.

I remember now that I've encountered this before also with the Segoe UI fonts - on the 2nd machine which runs media centre. In that case I was trying to install a tool to handle EPG processing, but the GUI for it wouldn't start because it was complaining of a missing Segoe UI font. At the time I put it down to something wierd with the windows install process as this was on a fresh install.

I'd be interested to know if anyone can tell if iTunes 10.1 has started using these Segoe UI fonts. I wonder if these faults disappeared when I did this upgrade, or if they were missing for a while and iTunes has only just started using them?

Ok - last post and correction...

Now that the fonts are fixed, what used to be in italics is now not. I guess that means that the non-italic Segoe UI fonts are what it was really trying to use.

I actually now think these fonts have been missing for some time, because some of the text (e.g. in the status window at the top) seems to be in a different font now than it used to be.

A big thanks to everyone - especially Tony - for all help here.

🙂 Excellent news, Malcolm. Glad that you got things working again.

... by my count that's at least three different possible issues with this font that can cause the missing text effects in iTunes? A registry-based font substitution, a missing registry entry and a couple of missing variations of the font? (And whatever variation Vortical had on this in XP that was fixed by the repair of all his installed fonts.)

There's a forum here for Level 4 and above users where we can report problems like this, so I'll try to get a "Notable New Technical Issues" topic written up for this tomorrow
