10.6.5 won't let me install

I can't seem to install 10.6.5. Through software update I down load a 500Mb fie and go into the boot down screen but then get:

"An error occurred during instillation"

and then

"The update could not be expanded ... will be done next time software update runs. Restart you computer"

I have tried downloading both the regular update (600Mb) and the combo update (900Mb). Both take appropriately long to download but then the dmg file can't be mounted due to a "checksum error". If I transfer the file to another mac on my network I can mount it from there (????) but then get a similar error to the software update above.

I have tried Repairing Permissions and Verifying my boot disk. I have tried a Safe Boot. This happens on both my iMac and Air. I have tried on three separate days.

It strikes me this is a corrupted download file, but then how can everybody else be managing?

Any ideas?

Today I solving the problem in this mode:
1. Download the combo update on the MACHINTOSH HD
2. Logout and change account using old account that i have imported (when new macbook pro enter in my home) from old macbook black
3. Installing the COMBO (software update don't install the update in the new account)
The install is completed and now macbook work properly.

I was having the problem that the update wouldn't install but would fail.

Checking the console, this was the error.

PKInstallPackageIdentifier = "com.apple.pkg.update.os.10.6.5.combo";
}

The issue is that the maximum number of files that could be opened on my Mac were too low. See below how to fix it.

Hope that helped!

I got the "An error occurred during installation". Then I got another error "The application backupd-helper cancelled restart".

I reran the update twice more, but each time got "An error occurred during installation", but without any mention of backupd-helper. Console gave the following explanation

15/11/10 9:40:35 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/MacOS/Software Update[453] PackageKit: Install Failed: PKG: extracting "com.apple.pkg.update.os.10.6.5.patch"

}

I rang Apple, who asked me to check Library/Updates/, which weirdly, despite three downloads, didn't contain any updates. They then got me to use Disk Utility to repair my permissions on my hard disk and verify the disk. I then reinstalled without incident, and this time the updates were in the Library/Updates folder.

I'm really annoyed now! I've just done an Erase / Install of 10.6 from the original disk (tedious in itself over remote disk) and still can't install 10.6.5, on a completely fresh computer. No luck with either the downloaded Combo Update or Software Update.

I've tried all of the solutions above. It must be a corrupted update file that I'm downloading in my region (Newcastle NSW, Australia).

Very frustrating!!!

I can download the 10.6.1 Update and successfully install. It is about 70Mb

I get similar problems with the 10.6.2 update and the 10.6.4 Combo Update. Both 400Mb+

I have tried a download manager (iGetter) and just Safari. Nothing works!

I have tried connecting to my router wirelessly (through Time Capsule) and directly.

I wonder if it is something corrupting the larger file downloads for this particular server, or the same problem on my internet connection (BigPond)?

Found this in another thread from the appletoolbox site, given by user 'Chris'
http://appletoolbox.com/2010/04/mac-os-x-10-6-3-fails-to-install/

This worked for me to install 10.6.5 and the file related errors (unidentified format etc.) went away with this. My install used to fail while the image was getting expanded/extracted.

The steps to do (as given in that site) are:

1. Open Terminal (under Applications, Utilities)
2. Type “sudo su” (without quotes)
3. Type your password (you must have admin account)
4. Type “sysctl kern.maxfiles” (this will show you the max open files allowed currently)
5. Type “sysctl -w kern.maxfiles=####” replacing #### with a number much larger than your current maxfiles setting. For example, if your maxfiles is currently 12000 change it to 24000 or maybe 30000.
