Hard drive not recognized - cable?

When I try to boot up my computer, I get a flashing folder with a question mark on it. However, when I move the hard drive to another computer and then boot up, there are no problems at all. Would I be correct in guessing that it's the hard drive cable at fault here? Has anyone had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?

I just had a chat with Apple, despite no coverage!

I can confirm this too. They have a free replacement for MacBook pro mid 2012 13'' in place. They just never announced it on their site.

the coverage is until June 10, 2017 or three years from the purchase. In another word, if someone like me bought his laptop in 2012, his apple care expired, but he qualify under june 10, 2017 etc. if someone bought It in 2015, he has until 2018 etc ..

That's the cable they started putting in the 2008/2009's Macbook Pros. They modified it to make it wider (and it was completely compatible with earlier models) in 2010 because they had to have known there was an issue. I worked at a help desk. I saw it. I know. We dealt with around 15 of these a week. This should go back further than 2012, as the issue was years before it. They've screwed over everyone that had a MBP before 2012. Heck, by refusing to admit/fix the issue, they screwed over everyone after 2012 too. That cable, at best, needed replaced. At worst, it destroyed the hard drive.

May 30, 2017 5:55 AM in response to Csound1

Yes, it would. It would cause unreliable read/write operations and force the drive to stay powered longer/attempt to read/write longer than necessary. If you were lucky, it would just corrupt your OS.

The cable changed from the 821-1226-a to the 821-2049-a model, which was entirely backward compatible.

I'm sorry, but you honestly don't know what you're talking about with this. And I'm not "calming down." I had to see people get screwed over by this thing because Apple never admits fault unless it's public enough.

Your first point was that this was after 2012. Would you not agree that, given the start of the start date of this post, that this problem occurred years before?

They modified the cable, even if you don't believe it. Why would you modify something that is completely compatible with the next iteration unless there was a known issue?

I realize you're being hyperbolic, and I would never suggest such a thing in this thread; I'm certain it probably goes against some user terms on this forum.

You don't agree with which part? You keep telling me I'm speaking nonsense, and offer nothing to refute it. The only thing I can't "prove" right at this moment is that it can kill your hard drive/corrupt your OS. I feel that I've answered your other grievances.

I want to be perfectly clear here, I have no problem with Apple hardware. I think it's pretty awesome (I'm Android phone myself, but use a MBP for work and wouldn't think to do otherwise.) And, on average, they're built better than anything else out there. My only real problem with their products is their price, but, heck, they retain their value well enough that you can sell it off after 4 or even 5 years and still make that difference back. I don't like them as a company though, and this is the biggest example of why. Your love of a company shouldn't blind you to a perfectly reasonable complaint. No one's perfect though--including companies--and their customers deserve better than this.

Then you doubt reality, and I can't do anything for someone that sees the writing on the wall/forum and refuses to read it. You either refuse to accept anything other than the story that Apple has given you, or have no ability to think critically on your own. I'm sorry.

I can't, for one second, understand how you can see and read through this forum post and not understand that this was a problem before 2012.

Okay, let me walk you through this, just in case you're not being a total troll, then I'm done with this.

8 + 12 = 20. Yes, I understand that. I'm saying this was a problem starting in 2008, not in 2012 like Apple claims. And in 2016, they had a [very brief] replacement plan for 2012s on, completely missing the 4 years prior. So if it were fair, 8 + 08 = 16. Good? Okay.

And, again, assuming you're not just some gaslighting troll, I don't understand what the confusion here is. But I'm done now.

My Mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro finally developed this issue. Any chance the Genius Bar would do a free hard drive cable replacement given the age of the laptop and non-Apple parts in it? I also have Samsung SSD installed and replace dvd drive with a second hard drive caddy.

If I go DIY, should I purchase the 2009 model part number (922 9062, 821-0814-A). I've read conflicting reports the 2012 cable is compatible but not exactly the right fit if used in a 2009 MBP? I know the 2012 cable is prone to failure as well, but if it's more reliable than the 2009 cable, I'll get the later cable.

I want to inform. I'm in Indonesia. And my 2015 purchased md101 just got the cable fail. I took it to authorized sp and ask them the program (also I've been prepared this thread as a proof) . And voila. My md101 is going to their repair desk for free.

Note: at first they gave me cost estimation. But when I ask them. Fortunately they admitted the program still exist

After a little more than a few weeks outside the warranty period of ownership of a mid 2012 macbook it crashed..for what seemed no apparent reason. We booked an appointment at an apple store some 200km from our home. We live in a remote village. After bringing it in we were quickly told we'd likely need to replace the HD. I wasn't about to replace a faulty one with what might be yet another so I inquired about upgrading to a solid state compatible. NO WAY. VERBOTTEN. We were directed to a third party who could do the job for us but would face apple excommunication as a result. We decided to go ahead but on inspection at the wonderfully helpful third party front counter we were told that the hard drive was fine and the problem lay elsewhere...HUH. We had driven some three hours and then sent goosechasing to find out something the genius' couldn't or wouldn't help us with at the their swanky apple lounge and deli bistro. What happened next told me everything I needed to know about Steve Jobs spoled

child. They have no interest in fixing things they make badly. We were quickly ushered into a Russian sounding genius expert's curt hands who without so much of a history told us the problem lay in a defective power ribbon cable which they'd fix sometime in the next couple days if we'd care to wait around for $60+ plus labour. I was outraged but outnumbered by all the happy apple loving crowd enjoying the latest greatest gadgets being purred over by the loving devotees. Nobody makes a scene on apple turf. Its tantamount to treason..To be continued
