Hi all,

I got my iPad a couple of days ago. When I connect it to the USB port on my PC it will sync with iTunes and do everything it's meant to. However at the top of the iPad it will say "Not Charging" next to the battery icon. It will charge when connected to the mains outlet but not via PC. The USB ports on my PC are 2.0. (MY iPhone charges fine when connected to these ports also)

Thanks in advance
Windows Vista, iPhone 3Gs (16GB), iPad (16GB)

    HI,

If you haven't done so, try switching USB ports to connect the iPad to.

Could be a defective Dock connector port or cable.

Might be a good idea to take the iPad to have it looked at.

It will not charge as fast as a wall charger but it should charge.
Also, not all USB ports on your computer are the same. Usually, the ports on the back have enough power to charge.

When it says "Not Charging", it is charging fine at lower current. It is an Apple scam to get you to buy more expensive extras like chargers for your iPad. Any everyday USB will charge it, a Bose dock will charge it, just more slowly which is better for the battery anyhow. It will always say "Not Charging" unless it is an Apple product charging it. A scam, period. Don't be suckered by Apple into buying lots of expensive goodies, that is all it is., a scam. Apple is the new IBM, all serve without question.

That's incorrect.  The "Not Charging" message is triggered when the charge rate is below a predefined minimum current.  It has absolutely nothing to do with regard to Apple not being the manufacturer.  Just for the record, I get that message when connected to the keyboard USB port on my iMac.

Be that as it may, the lower current may be sufficient to charge an idle iPad but, of course, it will take longer.  If, however, you are using the iPad to any significant degree, the lower charge current might not be enough to make up for the current being used and, in that case, the battery will run down.

Which is why they include the "expensive extra" charger with the iPad when you buy it....  pretty strange scam....

It says "Not charging" when in fact it is. It is a scam. Your devotion to the Apple religion is clouding your mind.
