iTunes broke my phone and now won't restore

My iPhone 3G (using iOS 4.0.1) stopped syncing properly, and then iTunes recommended updating the OS to 4.1. It crashed halfways through, and now the restore won't work, failing with unknown error (2003).

So now I have no phone! Help?

iTunes didn't break your iPhone. Error 2003 usually indicates a USB port problem.

Is your iPhone connected direct to a USB port on your computer - not connected to a USB hub?

If so, if you have a Desktop is your iPhone connected direct to one of the higher powered USB ports on the back of the computer - not connected to one of the lower powered USB ports on the front of the computer?

If a laptop, try connecting direct to a different USB port and the same if you have a Desktop. If no change doing so, do you have access to another USB dock connector cable to try to rule out a problem with the USB cable you are currently using?
