Remote app foro iPad, Apple tv and Cisco wireless lan controller (WLC)...

Hello team.

I have a problem when trying to setup and use the Remote app to control Apple Tv from the iPad or iPhone. I currently have a Cisco WLC with a couple of wifi-n access points, which are registered to the wlc. When I start Remote app on the iPad or the iPhone, The application can not see the Apple Tv as a device to control. In the same way, from the apple tv, I cannot see the shared playlist running on my Mac. I tried by cabling the apple tv and the Mac to my router and I was succesfully able to acces my shared playlist on the Mac from the apple tv, but not from wireless.

Today I tried a different setup. I turned one of the access points to autonomous mode, signed the iPad and apple tv to this new ap, launched the Remote app and worked fine!.

This means that when traffic hits the wlc, it gets ffiltrated or dropped, so my question is, which are the ports or protocols that the iPad, iPhone, apple tv and Remote app use to communicate with each other? What do I need to configure or open on the wlc to allow this traffic?

Thanks for your help and your time.

This could be caused by mDNS. I have had this same issue and this is my solution.

I have this working on 8.2.151.0 on a 5520 WLC.

Under WLAN

  • Select the WLAN and go to the Advance Tab.
  • Make sure mDNS Snooping Enabled.
  • IMake sure mDNS Profile set is set to default-mdns-profile. (Or the profile you use)

Under Controller - mDNS - GeneralI Added a Service to the Database.

  • Select Service: Other
  • Service Name: AppleTVRemoteApp
  • Service String: _mediaremotetv._tcp.local. (Copy and paste this, or type it exactly as it appears including the ending period.*)
  • Query Status: Checked
  • Click on Add

Under Controller - mDNS - Profiles

Select default-mdns-profile (Or the Profile that you use)

Under Services Name Use the drop down box to select AppleTVRemoteApp, then click Add

You can test this to see that it's working.

Under Controller - mDNS - General

Click on the hyperlink for AppleTVRemoteApp

If everything is working you will start seeing your apple TVs appear under Service Provider Information Heading.

*If you ever need to find a mDNS service string they are easy to capture by using Wireshark. That's how I found the _mediaremotetv._tcp.local. string.
