Why is BBC iPlayer no longer in AppStore?

I'm a UK user. I installed BBC iPlayer some months ago. I'd now like to formally report a complaint so I tried to reach that facility ('Report a problem' I think it's called) on the AppStore on my iPad. But the app appears to have vanished!

(BTW, my complaint is that every programme I've watched with it has had video and audio out of sync. Very irritating, and spoils the viewing.)

Wasn't the app just a link to the web site - bbc.co.uk/mobile or www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer ? iPlayer is just a web service, so just go to the BBC's iPlayer web site and look for support there. I think it is under the "more -> contact us" section (they have at least a searchable FAQ).

P.S. there is the caveat that for iPlayer, you'll need a connection of min. 1Mbps, so could it have been an issue with your iPad's's network connection speed, or was this over wifi?

Thanks Michael. Connection speed not an issue (using wifi).

Have now registered on the 'discussion' forums, and awaiting authorisation before I post. But so far I've found no contact email for BBC iPlayer support. And with the iPad Apps facility I assume (perhaps naively!) that the focus is then on the iPad app. This is purely an iPad issue - no lip sync problem using the desktop iPlayer.

I'm also curious why the app has disappeared.

The desktop iPlayer website uses Flash video streams, whereas the iPad iPlayer website uses different H.264 streams, so if there's a problem with the iPad streams you won't see it on your computer.

There has never been a BBC iPlayer app available from the AppStore. It has always been a web site.

No, we are not mistaken - you are. There has NEVER been an iPlayer app for the iPad.

The image you posted is EXACTLY what I get on my iPad when accessing the iPlayer in Safari.

If you add the http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/ webpage to your Homescreen, you get the iPlayer interface without the usual Safari address bar etc.

If you don't believe us, perhaps you'll believe the BBC themselves:

Terry, it is the web site, but it was re-done in HTML5 instead of Flash, so it would work on the iPad.

The BBC has never released an app to the app Store - they apparently have disagreements with Apple about terms and conditions. Anything in the app Store with "BBC" in the name is not actually a program officially developed by the BBC, but is 3rd party apps (some very good ones, IMO, so I'm not disparaging anyone's app).

Also, in the responses to that post, others complain of video and audio being out of sync, so maybe the beta still needs work?

That's not true. There is a BBC News iPad and iPhone app developed by the BBC:

The BBC Trust are separate to the BBC and governs what the BBC can and can't do don't do. The BBC always wanted to make mobile, iPhone etc. apps, but the BBC Trust wanted to investigate their impact on other commercial operators. It could've been seen as an unfair competitive advantage.

It's been going on for over a year, and was finally resolved back in July with the apps being released almost straight away.
