starting the other day, the 'k' key shortcut in fcp has randomly started remapping itself to slow motion rather than stop, which really screws up the j/k/l playhead navigation. i checked the key mappings and its still showing 'k' as stop. i've tried resetting the key mappings to default, restarting final cut, all to no avail. restarting the computer fixes it temporarily, but then it'll randomly change back to slow motion again after a while.
Are you sure your keyboard doesn't have any pizza crumbs between the 'k' and 'l', because it sounds as if when you press the 'k' you are accidently pressing the 'l' as well. Because the key combination k + l is the shortcut for slow motion playback.
Do you jave another keyboard available, to find out whether this is a hardware problem with the keyboard.
i'm familiar with the j+k slow motion shortcut, but i'm fairly certain its not a mechanical issue causing the problem. i tried an external keyboard and the problem persisted. restarting the computer will reliably alleviate the problem (albeit temporarily), as will trashing the preferences as gogiangigo suggested. but the problems starts up again shortly thereafter.
i'm pretty sure the problem started almost immediately after updating to 10.6.5. it seems odd that an os update would cause such a specific glitch. beyond repairing permissions is there any other "cleanup" maintenance that i could possibly run to iron out any update kinks?
sorry to bump my own topic, but i'm getting really frustrated by the frequency of this problem. i literally have to restart my system multiple times a day now as its the only way to (temporarily) stop this behaviour. and j/k/l are such frequently used shortcuts i really want to figure out how to avoid this. i've got all the latest prokit updates etc., have tried trashing preferences, and nothing stops the problem from recurring on a daily basis.
@Patrick Sheffield, thanks for the notice about the prokit update. I actually hadn't installed it until just the other day, hoping maybe it would contain a fix for the problem.
while it hasn't solved the issue, i can at least be certain the problem existed prior to it.
