How do you convert NTSC footage to PAL?

I've got some footage on a Mini-DV tape recorded with an NTSC camera, which I need to edit in my FCE PAL project. I can playback and see the footage on my Sony DSR-PDX10 DVCam, but FC Express doesn't recognise it when I connect my camera to my computer. Do I need an NTSC camera for that? What should I do?

many PAL-devices are able to playback NTSC-material, by ignoring half a dozen standards & settings, for instance creating 60Hz PAL (=which doesn't exist)
afaik, it is not possible to import such a non-compliant data-stream with a computer.

you need a NTSC-device.

Hello independentfilmmaker,

after a bit of research it seems that the issue is the signal that the camera is sending out. I'm no geek, but from what I understand the camera sends out an identifying signal to the computer. If that signal differs from the footage that is actually being captured, there is a conflict and you won't be able to capture. Have a look at these:

So there seems to be a possibility that you might be able to capture using iMovie. I know that it can be done with HDV, since i did it a couple years back using a Sony HVR-A1E to play and capture tapes shot in 1080i60. Alternatively you could try some other capture software:

hope this helps

Hi

a. You need a NTSC Camera (tape-player)

b. Capture into a NTSC FinalCut project

c. Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov

d. Use JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) to convert to PAL - Save

e. Import this new converted QT.mov file into a PAL FCE project.

Yes I've got the parallell situation. My TRV-900e (PAL) playback NTSC tapes nicely
on it's LCD screen and so to TV - BUT then BL/W - then I connected a VHS-VCR inbetween
that also playback NTSC and got a Color picture on TV.

Via FW into Mac - NO NTSC or PAL scripts works in neither iMovie or FinalCut

Then I thought that I might be able to use the analog signal.
• Connected A/D box - set to NTSC or PAL
Neither worked

SO - Use of a dedicated NTSC-Camera is only solution I figured out that works.
