Windowserver crashing

Same here, and ofcourse no answer of Apple whatsoever. As far as I know I only experience this when going to fullscreen with flash video or normal video. The best part is that every process just gets killed and all my work is gone.

I'm not gonna spend too much info but this is an extract from kernel.log:

I've had WindowServer crash on me lately as well, force quitting all programs and reverting to login screen. In the most recent case it happened while watching a flash video, I think either trying to adjust the volume or toggle to or from full screen. A previous poster indicated similar behavior. The previous time, I woke up the machine (an external HDD was also attached) and found it like that. Don't know whether the bug is in Flash or CoreGraphics.

Well I just replaced a stick of RAM under warranty, so hopefully that will help. I've started restarting my computer more often. I used to go months without restarting. Since I've switched practices, I've had relatively no issues with the WindowServer crashing. I say relatively because I think it's happened once or twice, but not nearly as much as before.

Actually MBP runs really fast but crashes to blue screen of death then quickly to start-up log-in screen. Used to happen several times a day now once or twice a week but still irritating.

A key driver of this is often COMMAND-T. I think it is related to flash and tried removing "top sites" from the preferences menu (flash updating on the site previews). But in the end that didn't seem to make too much of a difference. Firefox also crashes. Crashing happens sometimes running vmware (never happened until a few months ago and is scary although no terrible issues).

I am on my third logic board; crashing has happened with second and third boards and has been going on for about six months.

Flash - always uninstalling with Adobe tool and installing latest version

Maintenance - recently did a so-called clean install of OSX and ran Onyx

This didn't happen prior to ~fall 2010 so seems software related.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my mid-2010 17" MBPro for the past two weeks. I've got 8gb (of 3rd party certified-compatible memory) that has been working fine 'til now, but I do push my machine pretty hard. At first I thought it was the TotalFinder v1.1.15 beta release I installed that was causing it, but the problem continued after I uninstalled TotalFinder. I've found the problem occurs most often when I close a tab in Safari or another program via the keyboard shortcut (command-w), which is rather odd.

One specific thing I've found is that for the first two times in a row that the WindowManager crashes and logs me in again the system continues to work fine beyond some apps getting stuck (e.g. the "other" skype process might not fully quit, Terminal to the rescue). If it crashes a third time when it logs back in the screen remains completely blank though all of the apps are working can can be interacted with, forcing me to do a hard shutdown (I enabled ssh access so I could do it a bit more cleanly from another machine).

Beginning ~May2011, my Mac only crashes about once per month now.

I think Apple fixed some bug either in the last few iterations of OSX and/or Safari. I am currently on OSX 10.6.8 and Safari 5.0.5 and they are very stable (OSX 10.6.8 is a bit slower on boot up than prior version).

I am running a mid-2007 MBP A1226 with 4GB ram and a WD 500GB HDD. I have eliminated some of the power hungry processes and use Onyx frequently to keep things in order. I am very happy with the performance of this computer, including speed.

An update - I've reviewed all of the crash logs and have confirmed that the problem only started showing for me once I updated to OSX 10.6.8, it was problem-free until that update.

Have had my MBP for over 2 years with no major problems but since upgrading over the net from 10.6.2 to 10.6.8

have started having most of the above problems.... blue screen VMFusion not operating as normal etc.

Got particularly bad the day before yesterday. Ran the diskutility which found problems.. it rectified them and since then no more hang ups and VMFusion behaves the way it used to..... early days yet but I feel quietly confident

I upgraded my 2010 17" MacBook Pro (8gb RAM) to Lion last night, it went without a hitch other than taking 2.5 hours to do the upgrade. Tonight I had my first crash a few minutes ago, here's the error report from the console:

OSX Lion (be it GM) and had a few crashes already. This is from the log:

I'm really baffled by Apple's way of dealing with these kinds of problems. There's obviously something wrong.

The service is apalling. The service line is quite expensive but has waiting times of more than ten minutes. Does Apple listen, or even read this forum posts? Get your sh*t together!!

I (finally) did that on my OSX Lion laptop, it found several problems ("Incorrect number of file hard links", "Invalid directory item count", "Orphaned file inode") but the crashes continue. At least Lion is better about restarting the same apps again, as compared to Snow Leopard, but it's still REALLY annoying.

Out of interest, is ANYONE here having this problem with either an Intel or AMD/ATI graphics chipset in their machine? Is it only machines with nVidia chipsets that are having the problem? I've noticed that Apple doesn't use nVidia chipsets anymore..

1. Install Pacifist

2. Download SL Graphics Update 1.0 from Apple downloads

3. Mount DMG, but don't run the update by double clicking it.

4. Right-click on the "SnowLeopardGraphicsUpdate1.0.pkg", choose "Open With..." and choose "Pacifist" from the list.

5. In Pacifist navigate to "Contents of SnowLeopardGraphicsUpdate1.0.pkg", right-click it and choose "Install to Default Location".

6. Enter your password and wait until pacifist extracts all of the content to your system drive (agree to replace existing files).

7. Open /System/Library/Caches and delete everything from that folder (authenticate with your password).

8. Open /Library/Caches and delete everything from that folder (authenticate with your password).

9. Open "Terminal" app and type "sudo touch /System/Library/Caches" (authenticate with your password); "sudo touch /Library/Caches" (authenticate with your password again).

10. Restart the machine (it would be longer to start after rebuilding extensions caches).

Just FYI, the uplink13 fix via Hammid.SE caused my MBP to start kernel panicking on restart. I couldn't get it to boot up after following the steps. I am running 10.6.8, but I believe 10.6.5 was out when uplink13 posted his fix. Maybe it's out of date. Restoring from time machine backup as I write this.
