audio out port stuck on optical digital,red, built in audio stopped working

Suddenly the optical (red) signal will go on instead of my internal speaker system when audio is available. i.e. red light shining out of the jack. I need the audio feedback from my powerbook and can't always lugg a speaker system along! What to do?

It's only Quicktime! When I start Quicktime (7.0.3) the audio out switches to optical.

Turned the PB on this morning, RED LIGHT shining out of the AUDIO JACK, still no answer. If I plug in the external speakers, oh wonder, SOUND comes from these EXTERNAL SPEAKERS.
If I unplug them, NO SOUND from the ONBOARD SPEAKERS. Only a SAD little RED LIGHT from the AUDIO OUT JACK.
Candid Camera anywhere?

FTW,
I would call Apple Care. I have seen dozens of these same topics. Maybe I can suggest that you search these forums with the search utility provided on the forums ie:

http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?objID=f1026&search=Go&q=noaudio+fromspeakers

It seems to be a common problem, possibly when headphones are removed from the PB and the internal switch doesn't recognize when the headphones have been removed, thus not turning the internal speakers back on.

Thanks a lot genomez, but I haven't been able to find a solution there. Dell ehm I mean Apple doesn't ssem to be too interested. Are these discussions just repositories outside of google's reach?

Worked until 3 am. No sound from the built in speakers, had to use headphones.

This morning: started PB, built-in speakers work, no red light coming from audio-out jack.

I used to have a FIAT. Sometimes it would work, sometimes I wouldn't. But the FIAT was very cheap for a car.

The annoying optical audio out keeps on going on and getting stuck all by itself.
Plus the audio glitch/looping is back!
