On your Mac, launch iTunes.
Click the item to select it, and press the Delete key.
Do one of the following:
To remove the item only from your iTunes library, click Keep File.
To delete the item from your computer, click *Move to Trash*. The item is deleted the next time you empty the Trash.
Now sync your iPad.
I have never Synced anything before
Yes you have.
one of the first Setting Up tasks was to sync my iMac's iTunes library of songs to the iPod library on the iPad.
That is how it got sync.
Don't delete the songs from your iTunes library (unless you really never want them).
In iTunes, create a playlist of songs you do want on the iPad.
Connect the iPad to your computer and select it in iTunes.
Click the Music tab.
Select *Sync music* and *Selected playlists* then tick the playlist you created, then sync the iPad.
Only the songs in the playlist you chose will be on the iPad. All other songs will be removed from the iPad.
To change the songs on the iPad, just add/remove the songs in this playlist and sync the iPad.
