Deleted apps keep reappearing on my iPhone

Interesting problem that just started:

1. Delete apps on the iPhone (3GS, iOS 4, in my case)
2. Sync with iTunes, and the apps are reinstalled

- or -

1. Delete the apps in iTunes
2. Sync the iPhone - the apps are deleted appropriately, and the checkbox for the app is unchecked
3. Remove the iPhone, and then reconnect the iPhone
4. The previously deleted apps are now checked in iTunes and if a sync is started, the apps are reinstalled.

Thsi is NOT expected behavior. I DO have the "automatically install new apps" check box applied, but these apps are not new. I don't recall making any important changes to my set-up (e.g., I did not just upgrade to iOS 4.1 - that was a couple weeks ago).

I suspect this is a problem with a preference file, but I'm not sure which one, or if it's a problem with iTunes or the iPhone.

Any help appreciated!

No. They are some of my last few apps I installed, and I want to delete them. I've tried deleting them on phone, but they get reinstalled through iTunes. If I untick them in iTunes, it ticks them back automatically and puts them back on phone during the next sync. I'm also having problems where it's trying to reinstall all my apps that are ticked in iTunes, like they aren't already installed... But they are.
