Cannot connect to Cellular Data Network

Suddenly this afternoon my iPhone 4 stopped being able to make and receive calls. (However I can still send text messages).

It says "No Service" at the top bar and i get messages saying that it "cannot connect to cellular data network".

Any idea why this might be happening?
